Not sure why everyone is jumping the OP. His band sold 100 tix so it cost them nothing but effort. They are getting to open for a name act which is exposure for his band.

FWIW, I understand your position as 1 of 4 in a band. My only real point was not to count your chickens before they're hatched. Have you seen flyers or heard radio ads yet? Are you sure there is going to be a videographer there while you're playing? Who is the headliner and what makes you think it's going to be a sold out show?
I hope it all works out really well for you my friend, but I would be careful about letting your band mates get you into this sort of thing in the future.

Hey dude. No matter what feedback you're getting here. Good on you. You sold the tickets and you're going to play a big a$$ show at the House of Blues in SD. Beats the heck out of playing for $40 and a free six pack at Charlie's Bar and Grill any day. Hope you have a great show!!

Yessir. That was our impression. Mower, however has pretty much always sold out shows in San Diego. Local faves around here in the metal scene.
My brother played at the HOB in LA and made $700.00 for his effort. That was his cut and he was on local TV.
They sold tickets too. A heck of a lot more than the rest of us. Anyway, Mower was on Suburban Noize a few years back. They toured with Kottonmouth Kings quite a bit. I know for sure they were in an Moto- X video game too. Maybe not your genre.

A local band here in Sacramento rented a bus and drove their fans all the way to HOB in LA and still didn't sell enough tickets so had to pay out of pocket.
On the other hand they can now say, and do so prominently on their website, that they played the HOB in LA. There is a certain value to that which has earned them gigs and hooked them up with a promoter they probably wouldn't have got to otherwise.
I'm no more in favor of P2P than the OP but there definitely is a value beyond hiring a hall and putting your own show on, particularly in a cow town like Sac!

San Diego is Lost Angeles' minor league, as much as it tries to pretend it's not (I've lived in both...)
If you're on the way up, great. If you're on the way down, it could be a soft landing to retirement and obscurity. Or it could mean that you are coming to terms with being a big fish in a small pond. But there are only so many senior proms you can do before you consider hanging it all up...
So as much as San Diego is LA's 'B-Team' - it ain't cheap. You aren't renting any venue people will attend for $1500 a night - especially if there is alcohol involved - this is California...

As much as I too don't like the Pay To Play concept (something ingrained into Philadelphia politics on every level...) it seems some times you've got to pay the promotional cost to get the exposure. It's like placing an ad in a magazine or newspaper - you pay a price in the expectation it's an investment in the future. Some pay off - some don't...
