Double Bass Went and ordered a Messina

I've wanted a new cover for my bass for a while, but I got a kick in the pants this week and that led me to placing an order with Messina. I kept it pretty vanilla, but he's still making it just for Ilsa. Should have it in about a week.

Yeah, you have to call or email, but he's super quick to respond and very cool. I'll PM you what it was today, but I don't want to post it because someone will see this in 10 year and expect it to be the same, which it may or may not be.

I answered neddyrow in private mail, but I want to respect the fact that he doesn't publish his pricing. Probably his materials costs and such change year to year and he wants to be able to make adjustments - I'm guessing - but, I contacted him through his site and he got back to me within minutes with a firm answer. He has standard size options and will make custom sizes to your spec. I measured and my bass was an off-the-rack 3/4. He has a bunch of color options and I think you can even go multi-color and have stuff added and sewn on and ... I don't know.

I picked a dark, neutral color that wasn't black and added nothing fancy. He's making it while I waste my time on the internet and is going to ship it tomorrow. Talked to him on the phone today and he seems like a great guy. I know that we're all used to buying things through the internet without talking to anyone, if you get past that, it really couldn't be any easier.

Pitchers?
Here's mine. It's actually a bright yellow. I live and play in southwest Florida, so thought this would work. Gets lots of attention, and no one is going to mistakenly pick up my instrument. The guitarist I play with regularly, when he first saw the bag, remarked: "Is that a bass case or a life raft?"

Messina makes really great cases, and it shipped very quickly, despite being totally custom. Mine was about 50% more than a Bobelock about 4 years ago(?), but they have great features, are built very tough and come in awesome colors. My favorite feature is the really good strap that isn't pictured above that sort of goes from one side of upper bout to the other across the back. It is so much better than a backpack strap! I had one that was traffic orange that I loved. Went with a bass I sold. I reached out to David via his website for a quote using his form, and I am still waiting for a response weeks later. Your mileage may vary.

Been meaning to buy one of these for my small bass....Saw one yesterday at Matt Bohn's shop. Killing bag well made classy (nice material, dark blue, no extra junk, very roomy pockets and nice bow pocket. Light weight but excellent padding. On my must get list.

My case came today. It's nice. As someone else said somewhere, it fits like a wetsuit. I almost thought it wasn't going to fit, but I worked the bass in and now it's cozy (top to bottom). I was dubious of the lack of a neck cinch, but I'm not going to miss it. It just fits really well.

Quality is great. It looks like it's going to provide great protection, but it's not heavy. And it looks like it's going to last for a long time. I really like the zipper orientation on the pockets, which are made for accessing things in them when the bass is laying on it's ribs vs when the bass standing upright....something I would have never thought to care about, but...duh.

I immediately like the strap and pad better and the handles seem to be in just the right place. There are a number of other grabbies here and there that I think will be useful when I have it out and about town and loading in and out of things, but we'll see which ones I end up using. The bow pocket also looks like it was made to accommodate a bow case, which is nice, because I don't think the Moordian is. Really well designed and constructed at first blush.

I had the Std Moordian for a long time, maybe over a decade and I really have no complaints about it. I'll need to live with this one for a while before I really know, but I'm feeling good about my choice right now. Would not put anyone off of Moordian as an easy choice, though I'm not regretting mine either.

I will say that before I had my bass all the way into the Messina case, it already had dog hair stuck to it, which never happened with the Moordian. It's the difference in material. Moordian is kind of nylon/satiny, whereas the Messina is rougher. I think it will make it hold up better over time, but it's gonna be a little furry.

So, I've had the case for about 2 months now and I'm really happy with it. Fit is perfect, it feels like it is more protective than my Moordian, though that may be related to fit. The ergonomics of it are perfect. It's some how stiff, but folds up just as easily and neatly as if it were floppy.

The idea to orient the zippers so that they face up when the bass is on it's side is....brilliant...obvious...duh. It's just a great case.

My one nit with it, is that it picks up dog hair. The material is grabbier than it is satiny and mine is always going to be covered in dog hair. If I had one thing to do over again, I would order one close to the color of my dog...or I may just need to make sure my next dog is midnight blue.
