Clubbing them before you pull them in is a fine practice for things like bluefish and most sharks, but when you're talking marlins, sailfish, swordfish and the likes, I've seen MANY video clips (sorry, no personal firsthand experience) where they have jumped into the boat from 15-20 feet away headed strait at the person holding the other end of the line, so you better have a BIG club!!!!.

No different that dropping into the Gir Forest of India and getting tore up by a lion. Hunger and easy prey is simply what it is.

And some of you call yourselves "fisherman"......catch and release fools! Only keep it if your going to eat it....period. Take a picture and get a reproduction made if you want it mounted. This is the year 2005, we just can't go around killing everything for sport, there will be nothing left.

I am in agreement with the rest of the TB crew that think this is just wrong. Big sharks are fewer and fewer in number with each passing year, and the whole mentality of this is disturbing to me.
I would wager that this shark is not ending up in someone's freezer, parts of it may end up in an exotic soup in some Asian restaurant and some may end up at the fish market, but most of it will end up in a dumpster drawing flies.
As for the Florida attacks, those are primarily Bull Sharks, that are responsible for those attacks, if I recall correctly.
If a group of people got together and decided to go hunting for Grizzly Bears in Yellowstone and shot 20 or 30 of them over a nice summer weekend to see who could shoot the biggest one you'd have a massive public outcry against it.
But if someone gets mauled by a Grizzly most people see that it's a matter of wrong place, wrong time and would still react with opposition to a massive sporting event dedicated to killing the biggest Bear.
I think these people should sell their boats and buy a nice expensive convertible sports car, another well known and somewhat less offensive means of compensating for certain "inadequacies"
Anyhow...I'm ranting......that is all......

to the person who sed humans are just easy prey... sharks can be an easy prey for us. for the person who was ranting about it being called shark KILLING... its shark fishing. its not for the purpose of KILLING sharks. most the time, big sharks like these are preserved and put in museums. and lastly, afer the length of a fight that it would take to catch a massive thing like that, most fish will be too tired/stressed to swim off and will die half the time anyway.
