Double Bass Western Swing

I started the day listening to some this great music. I heard Hot Club of Cowtown at a house party several years ago. I think I am going to pull out the CD I have that has been unplayed for too long. The players here are all awesome!

You need to check out the original Western Swing guys:
Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys.
Guitar player Eldon Chamblin of Tulsa made Guitar Players list of best jazz guitarists.
Tiny Moore is excellent on mandolin.
The Country radio stations wouldn't play them as they were too jazzy. The Jazz stations wouldn't because they were too
country.
Also, look for the album "Hillbilly Jazz" with David Bromberg and a bunch of other excellent players.

Roy Lanham & the Whipoorwills fell between the cracks as well - not jazz or hillbilly, and of course rock 'n' roll had just hit the airwaves. They could play their asses off and sing too. Juanita Vastine is one of the best 'one record' singers I've ever heard. :)

There is just the one CD, 'Hard Life Blues' and its a treasure.

Thanks for the reminder GearHead :D .The Time Jumpers have a DVD out .... A live show from Nashville (Station Inn) .... http://www.thetimejumpers.com/ . Amazon has a package deal on CDs and DVD that's worth checking out but I prefer buying directly from the musicians so they make maximum dollar.

I saw the show on PBS one night and was blown-away. Those women can definitely bring a tear to a glass eye. All of those folks are The Best .... Started out as a loose-jam-band on Monday nights. Dennis Crouch on bass :D ! I Love that twin'n'triple fiddling stuff. Now I gotta go listen to the CD again :p !!

I LOVE the foot stomp as part of the solo!

Great playing. Looks like a bunch more Joel Paterson videos on YouTube and it will be another morning well spent.

Missed that foot stomp the first time I watched... must've been so busy watching I forgot about listening :atoz: Looks like he's got a little tap going during the drum solo too... hmmmm, be you're own rhythm section :p There's a gal in a Seattle old-time band that buckdances while playing guitar. Maybe I should take that up... yeah, right  some can, but my body hurts just thinking about it

Thanks to all for the great clips and links... I love playing western swing and that and my love for blues have been big motivators for working on walking bass and developing some chops beyond root-five. My fiddle jam friends seem to be gradually moving away from "all celtic, all the time" to playing more western swing and swing jazz standards and I'm liking the challenge. Oh look, there's "The Best of the Ray Brown Trio" right on top of my CD pile. Funny I never listened to jazz much till I got a DB and now I find myself streaming "jazz24.org" on the computer at work and hearing a lot I'd like to be able to play someday. Life is good.

Me too, the DB really opened up a whole world of great new (old :D) music to me. I have been obsessed with old Jazz lately, Cats & The Fiddle, Louis Jordan, Satchmo, etc. It's nice to find current bands that are keeping classic music styles from the past alive, especially when they are really good.

Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition

Hey Nashville reporting in on another Western swing band in town that i play with regularly. I wish there was some better footage & sound--but heck I'm just introducing u to it, live is way better anyways. The fiddle player is 81 yrs old, probably 79 in this clip.
Also check out my dad's band on Myspace, for western swing audio pleasure
