we've been replaced.

Ha ha! I get it...that's clever. A little jab to stir things up and make them interesting. OF COURSE, as a keyboard player, I have to bite--cuz I have no impulse control (unless I can assign it a MIDI channel).

Yes, playing the keyboard/piano is VERY different than this--and you know it.

:D

Yes, I do know that. I was just being pedantic. :smug:

I deleted my earlier post because after a full night's sleep (I'd only had 3 hours in a few days), I woke up and realized that I don't care about this. I've never met a musican who claimed to have been train on RockBand or GuitarHero. I guess this is really nothing more than a video game tournament like any other video game tournament. Do you guys actually give a flip if they have a Dance, Dance Revolution tournament? Are professional dancers everywhere going to be replaced because some kid is really good at playing "Simon Says" with his/her feet? RockBand is just a more complex--more expensive--Simon Says game. Actually, these games are fun but they really don't show anything more than that you have the intelligence of a lab rat, a poodle, a chimpanzee, and a dolphin. Congratulations!
If you are afraid of being replaced as a musician by a chimpanzee or a dolphin, I suggest you practice more.

Caeman said: "Now you know how bass players feel when they are placed by a keyboardist's left hand."
That's actually a legitmate concern because keyboard players can and routinely do replace bassists. Certain styles of music call for keyboard bass instead of string bass. The problem is that as technology has gotten better, samples of various string and bass instruments have gotten so good that now the keyboard player can realistically imitate an actual string bassist. Bassists argue against it: It's not the same, it looks stupid without a bassist on the band stand, etc. In the end, it is what it is. The keyboard can replace the bass; however, there are drawbacks. You get the same person's playing style on both instruments which limits the musical dynamic of the band, for one thing. I play both so I don't really care.

RockBand? Not my thing. I like FPS and simulators mostly.

H2SO4, that is.

Hate to break it to you, Caeman...

I saw an article on that a few months ago. I'd love to buy one of those just to have something a little more familiar than my keyboard while doing MIDI sequencer-based music. Plus, it looks cool, and the touch pad offers a new range of technical possibilities in your picking hand. Doesn't look road-worthy at this time, and I bet it's expensive to custom order one. No digital guitar for me anytime soon.

But really, we don't have anything to worry about. Even the owner of the site says he's not looking to replace the guitar, as he loves and appreciates the instrument, but to develop a new instrument altogether. MIDI controllers are just interfaces that send computer code to devices. They can be assigned to trigger any number of sounds from synthesizer circuits or samplers; that's their purpose. Acoustic and analog instruments have different playing mechanisms, different sounds, and different purposes.

As a composer, if I wanted a guitarist to perform a piece I wrote, I'd get a real guitarist. You can replicate sounds, but you can't replicate a musician's unique artistic ingenuity.

As far as the Rock Band concert goes... I'm sure there's a dichotomy between that demographic and the demographic that goes to actual music concerts. No threat there.

In instances like these I always look back at the things that are standard to us today. Imagine the first distortion heavy rift, the elders probably thought the world was coming to an end. Music as they knew it was over.

Pop music always gets its massive share of fanfare but the really creative stuff throughout the years endure and are remembered.

If someone is enjoying Rockband--good. I do remember seeing a sign on Guitar Hero on the loading screen that said "Sometime you should really think about getting a real guitar."

This thing is actually kind of cool...

I'm not worried in the least about Rockband or Guitar Hero or whatever's popularity rising. The truth of the matter is, these games cannot create music, they can only challenge you to press buttons and flip toggle switches in time with the music. They still rely on real musicians to make new music that can be used in the games. Sure, kids might not appreciate or enjoy the music that they are playing 100%, but can any of us say that we did either when we were younger?

Also, if you're worried about people gathering for one of these "concerts", you have yet to see what Koreans will gather together for...

Yes... this is real, and many many people gather to watch this...
