What’s your favorite Stainless string????

Unfortunately, my favourite Stainless Steel roundwounds are now out of production... namely Fender 7350M's. , And my stockpile is dwindling!

I did try some NOS Elites Stadiums (got them cheap), but they just didn't cut through as the Fenders did. Ordered some Dunlop DBS Stainless Steel's, in the hope that they sound similar to the Fenders.

Why do I like the Fender strings?

They sounded great, bright, growly & lasted for at least 6 months with no noticeable fall off in sound. Best of all, they were relatively inexpensive compared to other brands (and make it less of a hit when buying in bulk).

I did use Warwick Red Label Stainless, which were cheaper, lasted a similar amount of time, sounded pretty good too, but they were quite rough on the fingers. Would buy them again though.

Red packaging = Warwick Red Label.

They do make both nickel and stainless in the Red Label, so you would need to look at the packaging to see which type they were.

Me also came from the Swing 66 SS lover, then ProSteels (then FlexSteels in quite a while), and now MM Super Bright.

But me still have a curiosity about the non-MM version of Super Bright SS. Have you tried these also?

Yes, I tried a set before trying the MM version. It was only one set, but I recall them sounding a bit smoother and being more flexible. As I said though, it was only one set and years ago. Haven't bought any other rounds since discovering Marcuses.

I'm a DR Lo-rider fan, but has anyone else noticed issues with harsh over-tones? I've run Lo-riders for 15 years and never had issues with B string sharpness until the last two sets. I can't fix it with indent or moving saddles back, and I never had this issue in the past.

I remember enjoying a heavy set of DR SS Lo-Riders tuned DGCF on a Squier P years ago.

I’m a flatwound guy but I’m getting the itch to try some SS rounds on my Ibanez Roadstar II (P-Bass). I currently have TIJFs on it, and I’ve got D’Addario ProSteels on my Schecter Raiden Special-4 that sound pretty good.

If I were to try steels on my new P-type I might try DR Hi Beams or D’Addario ProSteels. We shall see.

Dunlop Super Bright Stainless Steel. After 30+ years of searching for roundwound strings that would retain piano-like tone and high end zing with aggressive mid range growl longer than a week without boiling them.... my search is over.

Hi Beams vs. Fat Beams... (Both stainless steel roundwound on a round core.)

My understanding is the FBs are "slow wound" at half the speed of the HBs, which results in a boosted low-mid, hence the name "FAT Beams". This "slow wound" process seems to increase the stiffness as well, although FBs are not as stiff as the Lo-Riders (hex core).

As for SS rounds tbh, I’ve never used them. Nickel rounds are usually too zingy for me so I haven’t tried SS ones as I think they would probably sound harsh to my ear. I do like Pressurewounds on Jazz basses although it’s currently strung up with the above flats.
