What a P Bass Sounds Like...

I have read what people describe as what a P bass sounds like but heard very few actual, good examples. There are many tonal variations and many personal opinions but I thought I would share my example and invite others to do the same.

A P bass sounds like whatever you can pull out of it. It has certain things it won't do (the neck position won't scoop like a J with both pickups on), but with different strings, different pickups, and different playing techniques, there's a decent sized world available to you. I won't give up my multi-pickup basses (I like versatility and having different voices available), but a single pickup bass (with a neck pickup like a P) is not just a one trick pony - it's got a grab bag of related, (but still good) tricks.

Even my cheap P-Bass copy produces that typical tone with lots of second harmonics.

I turned on the audio for all of the first five videos, that is the true P bass sound.

I always thought Pete Farndon got a great sound out of a P bass with Rotos on it. Round wounds.

Another great sound done with Rotos, John Wetton, one of my all time favorites. I saw him with UK in Boston in 1977, unbelievable band.

Wetton had a white P bass with no pickguard, first one I'd ever seen.
