What about Stagg basses?

Can you get Samicks or Jay Tursers where you are? or, for that matter, Jim Deacon?

:hmm: hmm, not as far as I know.
I should perhaps find some other stores, further away. :hmm:

But you can imagine that I, like most people, prefer to go to the local store where they know my name when I walk in and do not have to ask to try something out but just take it and try it (they know I respect their goods),... and get sometimes a cable or small item for free because I am a good costumer.

That's sometimes annoying for me coming here to TB. A lot of times some people are discussing products that aren't available here.
Well, ordering gear might be a good idea.

A Cort is a great cheap bass, would be worth tryin' a few out, ans Squier would be easily moddable considering its high compatibility with aftermarket parts.

I don't know enough about Ibanez to have much of an opinion there.

I don't know anything about Ibanez either.
But I looked at the specs of their basses on the Ibanez website. And the GSR100EX might be the tool I'm looking for.
Minor modifications I will do: pick up, bridge, strings.

I don't know pricings on the GSR100EX, I guess for the specs it has it will be rather cheap.
But the GSR has 22 frets and I want 24 frets. :ninja:
A SR has 24. :hmm:

Squier I'm not considering. Although they are very cool, not what I'm looking for at this point. (Perhaps in the future as a backup for my fretless.)

I'll search some more into Cort basses.

(Darkstride: like you said to me a couple of days ago, I'm also becoming an "über nerd" hanging around these forums too much.) ;)
(At your suggestion I probably gonna order a Fender MIA Standard fretless Jazz for the jazz project I'm also doing.)

I would recommend Cort highly as a cheap bass.

Here is mine though a bad soundcard and some sloppy playing!

I have owned this Stagg for quite some time...I love it. It plays great and sounds very good. Its alot of fun to have around...

Nice!!
I have the same one in red and unbelievably have had not a single problem with the neck, the frets...nothing, it plays and sounds great. I even used it for studio recording and it was fine.
I cant understand all of the bashing going on against these.. maybe I just got extremely lucky with mine who knows.
I should probably go out and play the lottery or something with luck like that?? :p

Lol, it sucks you in!

Anyway, what about this Ibanez?

Thanks guys for suggesting Cort.

I looked at their website.

I thought the Action series was neat,...

Untill I saw the Curbow section. :hyper:

The Cort Curbow4FL might be ideal to replace my main instrument: my Yamaha RBX260F.
And the fretted Curbow4 might be what I was looking for why I started this thread.
Both in Mystic Ice Crazer.

I know it's a big leap from asking about Stagg (OP) to Cort Curbow. But man...

This means no budget for a Fender American Standard fretless Jazz. But I still have the MIM for my jazz band project.
But I might sell the MIM and use the fretless Curbow for that.

Just a few notes about the Curbow, it's not the easiest to sit down with due to the small body, though its not so bad if you sit in a classical guitar position.

The fretless only has side dots, at 3, 5, 7, etc. Might make a difference to you, might not.
Great bass IMO. I'd love a six string one.

What about a Washburn,,?? i have one and for the $$ its a great bass

Like I said in previous posts, not much brands offered here in Belgium. :hmm:
There are probably stores here in that carry Washburn. But I don't want to make longer drives to new music stores. Especially since I like my local store nearby.

It suck being a Belgian.
You all, espacially Americans, don't realize how spoiled you are. ;)

But I'll give a Washburn a try if I come across one.

For the record. It doesn't have to be a cheap bass. I'm not filthy rich either... but I don't want to waste money off course.

Lol, it sucks you in!

Great price. For some reason I never liked Ibanez. I don't know why but I thought I'll give them a try.

But Cort, Curbow: that is love at first sight. :)
(I don't know if that's a good thing. :hmm:)

No problem: I never play sitting down. :D
Really, that was a vow I made when I started playing bass 9 years ago.
Always practiced playing standing because I did a lot of gigs in my early years.

And I don't need fretlines.
Not saying I am superb at fretless. But it's something you get use to. Especially if you play majority fretless.

Sounds like the Curbow is a match made in hell for me.

Except I don't know anything about luthite bodies.

Fantastic then, the fretboard is Ebanol too, so it wont wear much, if at all.

As for luthite, I dunno, some complain about the smell, but I never noticed a smell when I tried them out.

Heh, I know the feeling, if I had any use whatsoever for a third fretless, I'd have the one in my local snagged long ago!

Why don't you get it?

Then you'd have 3 amazing fretlesses:
Traben Tribal Sun fretless
Squier VM Jazz fretless
Cort Curbow4FL fretless

That would be a cool collection of fretless to own.
Just sell some fretted ones (not the Traben). :D

Sorry, did I gave you GAS. :o ;)

Heh, it ain't hard to give me G.A.S, but if I did get it, there would be no selling of other basses, none!:)

But the main thing is, I don't play fretless near enough, my Traben is my most used, though I need to add a Hipshot, my Squier cover alternate tunings, and when I get the mood, roundwounds.
I have a spare Fender fretless neck too, once I get a body for that, its another fretless I don't really need. Still gonna do it!:D

Order from www.Thomann.de. They have a return policy, and you'll get proper gear. Even their entry levels are quite nice, but I'd go for a ibanez GSR190 / GSR200, or a cheap yamaha / peavey / esp / cort.

Second hand, you'll find those for cheaper than a stagg :)

Thank you for directing me to that site.
I have a great experience with my Yamaha. Don't think I will sell this one I guess.

Major GAS for Cort now.

The Curbow4FL for 377€.
And I had a 2000€ budget in mind... first for a Fendere MIA Jazz, an better amp and some effects.
But I'm gonna reconsider it.
I can get two Corts (fretless and fretted), a much better amp and some more effect pedal. :D

I don't know if my jazz band members will like it if I show up with the Curbow. But over here we are rather liberal.

Thanks again for the link to the ordering site, I'll be looking around on it for some time.

I bought a cheap short scale Stagg for my son to start out on.
I'd say it was a good value. I mean really, what can you expect for $170? Sounds and plays fine. Only issue with it is constantly loose input jack.

During the search we looked at Johnson, a Bronco and some other I forgot. The Stagg was the winner probably because the store actually took the time to do a proper setup on it before they hung it on the wall.

like any low price/low end instrument, it's the luck of the draw..I've got a fretless Stagg bass that plays just fine..I had to do some home intonation adjustment to get it more true with itself, but all is fine now...as I'm sure you've heard many times, go try a few out for yourself and then decide.
