Generally most roundwound strings have the same bright, edgy sound. The flatwound sound varies greatly between manufacturers. Fender flats sound mellow and thumpy whereas Rotosound flats are really bright. I play with flats and I use Rotos. They sound great for rock... Just listen to Iron Maiden.

There was a time when all basses came with flats and the only strings you could buy for bass were flats Flats were the standard, then roundwounds became popular and now roundwounds are the standard. Basses come from the factory with rounds and most of the strings available are rounds. Most bass players prefer rounds. But you can still find flats if you search for them. Periodically I try flats, but I get tired of them after a few minutes.

Ok, well does anyone know what Ric5 was talking about when he said he "gets tired of them after a few minutes"
The Rotos are only bright for less than a day. Like everything Rotosound makes, they tend to die quickly.
There are different flavors of flats, just like there are different flavors of roundwound strings.
Tapewound strings are strings that've been coated in Nylon. They can be flatwound or roundwound. I've yet to nylon groundwounds, but they might be out there.
On my myspace there is two clips. A Ric with flats and a P-Bass with nylon flats.
