what are the best basses in $450-$550 range?

A used Fender Japan jazz bass cuz that's what I like. But I'm not you, so my opinion doesn't matter.

$500 new gets you a decent mid-range instrument that may or may not needs some upgrades, will sell for $250-300 if you decide to change it for something else down the road.

$500 gets you a really nice used bass, that was probably nearer $1000 new and getting into pro grade quality and likely not needing any mods.

That said - any bass in any value range can be deemed to need mods if there's something specific you want or think you need. For metal with a bright, grindy sound, you probably want either a dual humbucker style bass, or something with a PJ setup. Spector, Warwick, Ibanez, Fender, Schecter... all with have models that have both a suitable sounds and suitable look for you.

Cliff played a Rick and an Aria Pro II, neither of which you'll get for $500, but with the right technique, amp and effects, almost any bass can get you the sounds you want. Choose what feels best and what might be best bang for your buck and go from there, but do consider used - it'll get you a better axe and/or leave you more money for amps and pedals.

This Schecter is real nice. Sounds killer with great looks. With the Amazon Prime card the price is 329.00. I would go to GC and try to get that deal. Otherwise it's 399.00 but still worth it.

On that price range, Cort basses are simply the best I've found.

Also, if you find interesting stuff definitely buy used. That goes for amps too.
Consider spending 40 bucks or less to have the instrument checked out by a luthier before you decide.
