What are you reading Chapter 4

I am richer, and smarter, for having read this book.

I am dumb lucky for having stumbled across a Signed Copy! while wandering around a used book & record store in Ft. Collins, CO this past Spring!

Sure, I’m an old Dead Head, but this book goes WAAAY beyond Mickey’s ‘band stories’.

He obviously holds the past generations of Songcatchers...the wax cylinder guys and gals from a hundred years ago...in inestimable esteem.
He loves identifying himself as a Songcatcher, and preservationist...

and Billy’s bandmate...a surviving member of that Band Beyond Description. :)

As well he should.

I'm reading the new book Fare Thee Well about the Dead after Jerry died. It dispels the whole myth of them being a "family." Phil and his wife were pretty diabolical and authoritarian.

Yeah...I’ve heard about some of those stories.
Of course they make me feel... ... .... well, other than ‘sad’, I’m not sure how they make me feel.

The band...the musicians, the music they made, and the many, Many other people who feel as I do...aren’t a ‘phase I went through’ (with a wink & a nod).

In light of the words “tell all” splashed across the effort to sell more books, I’ll probably just crack another beer (wink, nod:whistle:) and drop the needle on my 40something year old copy of Europe ‘72...Still, my favorite incarnation of The Heart Of Gold Band.

Yeah, a lot of Dead Heads are upset with the author. My feeling is "the truth is the truth." I'm an ol school fan but never really bought into all the peace and love. I was into it for the musicianship and the lyrics. For me, they were a gateway to everyone from Coltrane to Ornette Colman to Bill Monroe to Ledbetter to Merle Haggard to Big Bill Broonzy...

Just finished William Shatner's autobiography today. Someone stole the center page out of the book, which I brought to the attention of the library staff. It's a shame, it was a page of photos.
Anyway, on to the next one:

I'm not starting at the beginning, so first I'll need to read the synopsis of the prequels.
This was my favorite of the entire series, though most people don't rate it as highly. W and G and The Gunslinger both feel much more like spaghetti westerns with SF/F elements than the others, which probably explains why I enjoyed it so much.

I've only read the first 5 books, I think. Can't say how much starting where you are could make a difference... but a whole lot of crazy chit happens before.
there's also tie ins to shorts, novellas, etc.
Kingverse?

We went for a long drive this past Spring.
We stayed at the Zane Grey campground near Sedona, AZ where they had an Extensive collection of Zane Grey novels...take one from the shelf, and promise to pass it along.
My kinda lending liberry!

We read it aloud to each other.
...chewed up lots of hours behind the wheel...the hour after a couple of games of Battleship, and bed time.

Great story...incredible writer.
...Utterly unique to my experience.

Dreaming the Beatles, by Rob Sheffield. For some reason I was expecting a more distanced, socio-psychological approach, but it's good fan writing, delivering insights in every chapter.
