The Last of the Mohicans - James Fenimore Cooper
The second book in the timeline of the Leatherstocking Tales and the second book in the 5 novel series as published. The Deerslayer, the first novel in the timeline was actually the last book published. Last of the Mohicans is the most famous of the tales and considered to be the best of Cooper's books.
Good story. Lengthy. Tells of the time in young North America set in The French-Indian Seven Year War. British and French were fighting for territory pre USA and both sides using Native American Tribes in battles against each other.
The plot os long and twisted and complicated. Read the book. Written the old style English, but you can see where American writing is breaking away from that of the old European style of say Dickens, Hawthorne, etc, and just sounding more American. Still old style of writing where words are very concise and used in really spefic meaning to describe scenes, scenery, actions, and ideas. Very cool.
I read Deerslayer and wanted to continue the pentalogy having heard more reference of Mohicans in school and discussions. Will maybe one day read more of the series, but this will do for now. Cooper'd out - but he is a fine, fine writer. Again - wordy sumnab*tch.
Old school sci-fi this week:

Such a great series of short stories and novels.
And so influential to what came later--The Death Star, The Borg, The Terminator, Daleks, etc.
Started reading the book on Independence Day.(in my best sales rep voice...)
An Excellent Choice, good sir!![]()
Danny and the Dinosaur was a favorite for my son and my grandson. Alas, they are both too old now, so I don't have and excuse to read it.
