What are you reading Chapter 4

Just finished the Salvation series by Peter F. Hamilton. He is my favorite contemporary sci-fi author. Incredible stories very well written. His "Night's Dawn" trilogy sits at or near my all time #1 list.

Just started a book called Raven One by Kevin Miller. Naval air warfare novel set in the Persian Gulf. Really enjoying it. Got it for cheap on my kindle from Bookbub. These kinds of deals are hit or miss and this one is a definite hit.

On Hearing Eyes and Seeing Ears: A Media Aesthetics of Relationships between Sound and Image

“A medium is a medium is a medium. Therefore it cannot be translated. To transfer messages from one medium to another always involves reshaping them to conform to new standards and materials. …"

I’m about 3/4 of the way through and thoroughly enjoying it. Bruce writes beautifully and it’s hard to put down.
I was a huge Maiden fan up until Bruce left. I did see them on tour with the X Factor, but never lstened to or bought the album. I have yet to hear any of Bruce’s solo stuff, and the one song Wicker Man when he did come back, sounded like the same old stuff that I was getting bored with. Maybe it’s time to look into some of this old and new material to see if I’ve missed something.

Just my humble opinion, but Maiden's last studio album (Book of Souls) sounds more like a Dickinson solo album than your typical Iron Maiden album. Only one song has the Maiden 'gallop' (The Red and the Black), the rest are good/great songs but not your standard IM fare. Much more influence from Bruce and Adrian. Awesome album all the way through, IMO.

(And be prepared for something totally different with 'Empire of the Clouds'. An 18-minute epic written by Bruce, featuring the first recorded keyboards from the band. I'd suggest a quick Wikipedia read-up on the subject (Crash of the British airship R101) prior to listening.)

I can only imagine the things he would’ve had to say about the world in years since he died.

Smokers: if you haven’t quit yet, please do.
He never once pulled a punch while remaining civil.
I've got Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins on tap after that one.
Sams podcasts are also riveting.
They never should have put up thriftbooks.com

I obviously can’t post the video here but he once responded to an opponent’s point by calling it “sinister piffle.” I’ve enjoyed every opportunity I’ve had to use that in conversation.

Thanks! I will have to give it a listen. The Iron Maiden formula (gallop on every tune is why I lost interest). Weren't there keyboards on Somewhere in Time (title track intro) and Seventh Son (Moonchild intro)? I remember listening to a podcast or radio show about the airship several years ago. I'll go back and try to find it.

That could very well be true regarding the keyboards...I just remember reading it somewhere and took it at face value. (Or maybe those were guitar synthesizers on the earlier songs?) Either way, great music.
