Here Comes the Night:
The Dark Soul of Bert Berns and the Dirty Business of Rhythm & Blues
- Joel Selvin
About songwriter, musician, publisher and idie label BANG Record owner Bert Berns. New York Bronx kid started late in life in the music business at 30 years old mid fifties. Worked his way up mostly through Atlantic Records with the Ertegun Bros and Jerry Wexler. Worked his way up through the industry ranks to become a songwriter and later producer in the Brill Bldg, NY NY. Working with songwriters like Liebmen and Stoller, Goffin-King, Barry-Greenwich writing hits first for R&B artists and later in the 60s for rock acts, before bands started writing their own material, ala The Beatles. His song discography is LONG AND AMAZING!! US OLDER ROCKERS know and have PLAYED ALL OF THESE TUNES!! He wrote a ton of hits incl "Twist & Shout" for the Isley Bros later covered by the Beatles. His trade mark was wild big production and incorporating Cuban Latin grooves. Was caught up in the dirty dealings of the music business as far as friends in the mob leaning on the business, payola and kickbacks, behind the counter sales of unaccoutable cut out records. A really interesting time for the music business. And of course tells of all of the studio musicians and how they came about to be heavy hitters = NY Crew, Detroit, Stax Volt, Muscle Shoals, et all. Burns died at an early age 38 in Dec 30, 67 of heart disease brought about from childhood rheumatic fever. Berns was inducted as a non-performer and given the
Ahmet Ertegun Lifetime Achievement Award with the 2016 class to the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I had never heard of this guy! A couple had been renting a small vacation cottage across from my house for months - since about February. Pretty much kept to themselves, but liked listening to me practice bass in my garage. Was talking to the woman and she introduced herself as Cassandra Berns said her father was Bert Burns. Said I wasn't aware of the name; so later she dropped by a DVD =
BANG: The Bert Berns Story which I highly recommend! She and her boyfriend came from New York and got stuck in this little isolated Oregon coastal town visiting her brother when COVID hit, so hunkered down here 'til New Years. Took off for LA where she is putting together a Broadway musical of her fathers life and career.
Super recommend the book and DVD to those interested in the early R&B/pop/rock music business and music scene, and the songwriters and wheeler-dealers of that long bygone era!
