I am working on scheduling time to learn something on bass other than new music. I'm not trying to dodge your questions. I'm a big time management guy. Here lately I've had to learn so many new songs (between my band, fill-in gigs, and church) that I haven't had time to woodshed. But I'm working on scheduling to woodshedding session per week. I need to brush up on my sightreading notation first. Then I'll dive deeper into technique.
I hear you man. My life is a delicate balance, and time management is key. With a pretty important job, two kids, a wife, gym, and martial arts, it aint easy man.
Jazz walking bass. I got an instructor to help me find and fix the holes in what I have learned on my own. This is hole 1. Also, working on actually knowing the key signatures and such.
Nice. Are you doing the key signature stuff away from the bass or incorporating it into an exercise?
A little of both. With my bass in hand I can name the notes, #'s, b's, relative minor, the note of any scale degree, notes of major and minor chords, etc for any key. We are working on moving from me figuring it out to knowing it. Some of it is just going to be unlocking and using some of the stuff I do not know I know.
Even without my bass in hand I find myself using my fretboard as a guide. Guess I know it better than I though.I'm doing some similar things with my teacher. it's amazing how, without the bass in my hand, my "knowledge" is not what I thought it was
Currently, I'm doing a 2nd mod to a G&L L-1500; reputation as very bright and aggressive sounding. Leo designed these to compete with the EBMM basses.
Already found the capacitor mod to lower the resonant frequency of the single PU for more bass all the time. Changed value of one cap and added another to the bass pot. Result!
Finally got around to taming the treble boost when active mod. I used to have to turn the treble pot all the way down and run like that. This mod had me replace a resistor on the pre-amp with a different value. According to G&L, the existing resistor on the pre was the wrong value anyway (2.2 kohm instead of 27.4 kohm). No wonder it was too bright all the time. Now I can get different tones as needed. And finally get back to practicing songs & scales!

Well I'm more waiting than working. Waiting on whether or not I made the muster for a festival oriented band. In the mean time, two of my old band mates decided that we need to get together and work on some stuff. Talk about timing. I find it a little weird that this happens on Monday after a 4 hour audition on Sunday. I'm finally tackling slap, now that I've got a bass with roundwounds... Ain't easy on a six stringer though. Quite tough to be clean.
Currently, finishing my third scratch build precision bass. Should have it ready this weekend after I make a pickguard, assemble, and do the final setup. Also, lots of ear training. I'm in three projects, one cover band, two originals. The two original projects are sending me recorded tracks for me to play along with and write my own basslines. Looking to be a very musically busy year.
Current band has experienced some flux with lead singers (imagine that), so I have been trying to get into singing lead on more tunes.
One of our band mates spends a couple of months in Florida in the winter, so we aren't gigging right now. In the meantime, myself, our keys player, and our BL have been getting together informally to try out different songs. We like to pick stuff that pushes us vocally and musically. A lot of fun working on some Beach Boys, Seals & Croft, and deeper tracks from Steely Dan and George Harrison. It's such a different experience playing at greatly reduced volume, no drums, and only one guitar. Really emphasizes the vocals and you can really hear each other. Like I always say, volume covers up a lot of mistakes.
