What are your top choice strings for Ibanez SR Basses

Trying around different strings for my Ibanez SR300EL and due to luck of experience (only fiddling with the bass about a year now) I would like to get some input or opinions of Ibanez SR owners on strings. What are your favorites and for what style of music? I am more into Rock, and Metal if that helps in your suggestions.

Thanks

Strings aren’t overly expensive and there are a lot of options. I believe that Ibanez uses D’Addario XL nickel roundwound as their stock string. What did you like or not like about them?

While some might fit better into a given mix than another there isn’t any right or wrong string for a particular style of music. Its about what you want to hear (bright, warm, mellow) and how they feel in your hands (smooth, rough, flexible, high tension).

I have 5 Ibanez SR basses. Each uses different types of strings:
  • Elixir Nickel Nanoweb
  • La Bella Flatwound
  • D'Addario Nylon Tapewound (on a fretless SR)
  • D'Addario Chromes (on a semi-hollow SR)
  • Dunlop Super Bright Nickel
I play all sorts style of music. If I were to play rock & metal, I'd bring the one with Super Brights, or better yet, I'd bring my BTB strung with Super Bright Stainless.

Hate to say it but strings are usually not decided upon by what bass they are being installed on. But usually by the style of playing and the feel of the player.

Been through all sorts in over 50 years of playing and with over 20 or so basses.

Currently I've been drawn to coated strings (if budget shopping, like DRs or Rotosounds) I'd prefer the Roto Nexus over the DR coated colored strings. And have basses like a T-Bird and Warwick with them on there.

But for my main axes, I'm using Optima 24KT gold plated Rounds. They are by far the best sounding and longest lasting and best feeling Round I have ever played.

All 3 of my USA fretted Spectors are now wearing them. And I love them. Pricey but worth it to me and last longer than anything I've had ever in the past.

But on my Fretless basses there are LaBella tape wound special edition Purple Haze on one, and Rotosound Tape wound RS 88s on the others.

BTW - I am a finger player that does some slapping, and cover Rock, R&B, and Progressive Jazz.

I have had the best luck on various models of SR basses with the Ibanez that they come with OEM. They have the best balance of tone, longetivity and price. That said, when I want something with slightly more oomph I have used GHS Super Steels, and when I want something rounder, I have used La Bella White Tapes.
