Since this is a "back up" bass, and versatility is not a bad thing STRONGLY consider a G & L. Tributes are cheaper, but insome cases the American made versions can be had for close to Tribute prices, and without a doubt the L-2000 basses are super versatile, and have a great grind to them, whch I think would help you cut through the "metal" landscape, sonically speaking.
Really, unless you just DON'T like them, you can't go wrong. They play great, have great finishes and the Tributes share for the most part the same electronics as the Americans and sound the same in most cases.
