This has been documented in other threads; George played the Burns on rehearsals only, not the master track. Other than the "Paperback Writer" session, the Burns bass was never seen again.

I wonder,given that most of the many guitars everyone is trotting out on this show seem to be vintage,if the gold top bass Brian is playing is a real vintage Gibson,rather than the Epi JC reissue? I've also seen Brian playing an SG type bass on previous tours.

I was close enough to clearly see the gear at the Seattle show. Brian was playing an Epi JC.

Yeah, it is a great bass. I wasn't clear: my comment wasn't about that it is a relatively inexpensive instrument. Rather I found it to be an interesting juxtaposition of Paul McCartney with his Hofner representing the British Invasion, while Jack Casady was part of the acid rock volcano that erupted out of San Francisco.

Paul was a big fan of Jack Casady. I used to have a book called "The Jefferson Airplane and the San Francisco Sound" by the music critic for the San Francisco Chronical, whose name I can't remember. In it were extensive interviews with all the members of the Airplane. Casady was recalling a time when Paul was in San Francisco and came to visit him. He said he was very humble and highly regarded his basslines and unique playing style. I seem to remember he also wanted to meet Grace Slick but she wasn't up yet! Jim
