Personally, I don't idolise anyone. I think putting musicians up there on a level above you is self-defeating and limits you to being "second fiddle" in your own mind. That's not to say that there aren't people that I have been influenced by and respect. I just think that if you put these people above you, you are probably mystifying them instead of understanding their accomplishments in a way that can better you as a musician yourself.

Paul McCartney - what can't this man do when it comes to music??? His playing, his sound, his style - all set the bar hugely higher for all.

Chris Squire - IMHO, the perfect combination of technique (awesome!), taste, creativity (listen to ANY Yes song!) and added dimentionality to the way people think about bass guitar

Stanley Clarke - amazing technique, awesome ensemble playing with Return To Forever (with Chick Corea, Lenny White and Al DiMeola), and the ability to move through an endless variety of styles and basses - including electric bass, acoustic bass, piccolo bass.

Those are my Top 3 "impact" players.

Other key influences for me were/are:

- Walter Becker
- Berry Oakley
- Willie Weeks
- Mel Schaeffer

Great string....its nice to think about these guys once a month or so....
