What bass is the growliest of them all?

Growl to me is the bass on many of the Boston songs. I describe it as when each note oscillates. I've never heard a live bass sounds like that. There is another thread on the tricks of the recording trade.

I do know during the David Sykes Boston-era (late 80's-early 90's),he (very) surprisingly was playing a Peavey Dyna Bass 5-string. That's not a typo, either!! A Peavey Dyna Bass 5!

For me it's my Lull M5V.

My bandmate / lead guitarist / engineer agrees with me. He says I'm only allowed to use this bass from now on. LOL!

Spector NS2. Easy.

I do have to agree, wholeheartedly. Has anyone gave the Spector Alex Webster Signature Bass a listen. Jesus.... Talk about a growly, modern tone! Wow.

Here, give your ears a treat. You'll thank me. And, it just so happens, a member here on TB (Jaymi) has a clip that best represents what this monster can do, tone-wise. Awesome tone!

Man, if you need more growl than this, you'd have to somehow put strings & pickups on a friggin' grizzly bear.

I'd like to have one of these, painted BLOOD RED, to match those cool-assed red inlays. :bassist:

Wow..

I suppose the growl is a very subjective matter, but I associate it with a bit of grit and healthy mids. I still believe my P-bass is the growliest basses I've ever played through the right rig. That rig being a Sunn 2000s or 1200s with the treble and contour cranked and into the bright channel. Here it is with year old Swing 66s on it, and it's still pretty growly.

I like the tone but I'm not sure if that is growl (to me). You sure made that p bass sound like a j bass :)

Yeah, gritty twang might be a more accurate way of putting it. It's funny you mention making it sound like a Jazz, as I've never been able to coax I sound I'm found of out of a Jazz! I have one, but I replaced the neck pickup with a Bisonic clone. In the first vid it might be due to not so hot sound quality off the camera, as my sound usually has more bass to it (I know it did on stage that day anyways).
