Jerry Watts for me - I played drums for over 30 years and was just getting to the point where they had ceased to be emotionally satisfying to me. I was gigging a lot and was playing with some great musicians but they just were not "me" anymore.

Anyway, I went to the smurf jazz festival in San Diego and one of the players was Greg Adams (ex-Tower of Power). Just before the first song (like 10 seconds) Jerry Watts came running in and plugged in - he had been stuck in traffic from LA. He just killed it for the whole set and was my inspiration to take up bass.

FWIW - I have not touched my drums in 13 years.

The first bassist that really got me to into bass was Flavio Cianciarulo from Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. Some random girl at school heard me listening to "Matador" and she gave me their newest album (at that time) "La Marcha del Golazo Solitario"....just PURE brilliance IMHO! I even picked up a five string fretless to start learning on...LOL...big mistake

But I've grown a lot since then and started listening to many other players that inspire me from various genres.

What bass player inspired you to start playing?

The one that graduated from our then State Champion Jazz Band...I was the guitarist, but since we would be "defending our title" the following year, we knew that bass was MUCH more important than guitar for a 20 pc "big band".

I picked up the bass in summer of 1980 and have never looked back. It felt so much more natural than guitar for me. No regrets!
