John Paul Jones - my favorite Zep song of all time is still "What Is and What Should Never Be", largely because of his bassline.

Chris Squire - "Roundabout" of course is classic, but there were many others. His playing brought bass to the front which was revolutionary at the time.

Well, actually he took up guitar, and well, you can leave the rest to good old-fashioned sibling rivalry.

That, more or less.


I was always the more musically inclined and when it turned out he started playing something and i WASNT (i already by then had big dreams of starting a band, in which, naturally, playing nothing, i would sing....) well that wasn't gonna happen, so i started messing with his guitar and before long was mainly playing basslines anyway so i picked up bass so we could play together. I had never manifested a particular interest in bass before, though the moment i picked it up i knew it was meant for me. This coincided with me getting heavily into The Cure which is known for its proeminent and melodic basslines and the fact that they were easy to play but very upfront in the mix and driving the songs really pretty much right away steered my bass playing in this direction.

Try playing the bouncing octave riff in "Halo of Flies" for 3 minutes straight without stumbling. He's great....but he's no Kip Winger! BAHAHAHAHAHA!
