What bass player inspired you to start playing?

I kept promising myself that I'd learn to play bass, but I kept putting it off. Hearing Stu Zender on the chorus of "High Times" by Jamiroquai and Randy Hope-Taylor's playing on "Still A Friend Of Mine" by Incognito, pushed me over the edge.

Jah Wobble. The tone on that first Public Image album was one I searched for for 15 years, and found it by accident when I started using half-wound strings!

Jean Beauvoir, because of his phat basslines on the second Plasmatics album Beyond The Valley Of 1984. Not many people heard them because they saw the band's stage show first, went EEK! and didn't go past that.

Mike Watt. Enough said.

I have a lot of reservations about Fieldy, and quite bluntly, all of them not very flattering. Never been impressed with his playing and definitely don't like his band. I remember reading somewhere -- I think it was Bass Player magazine -- that he didn't pick up an instrument (bass) until he was 18. I was playing bass in a bar band when I was 17, so when I read that, I was horrified. But you're young, so eventually and hopefully you'll hear a lot of better caliber players. I do give you some props for mentioning Kim Deal in your profile... very underrated player!

The deep booming bass sound that Fieldy creates is what i like the best, i know most of it is slap bass but i still like it. And the question was "what bass player *inspired* you to start playing?" And Fieldy inspired me.

There are loads of other bass players i like, e.g. Krist Novoselic, Daniel Lorca and Jeff Ament. They might not be all great bass players in your opinion but they're bassists i like.

And Fieldy got a bass when he was 5 years old. I understand you are entitled to your opinion, and i'm not trying to create hassle.

Daniel Lorca from Nada Surf, when i heard "the plan", it just sounded so cool. He might not be the best but i just loved the bass in that song

Mike Gordon. My bro gave me a live video of Phish in Germany, and I was just blown away by how much he controlled and added to their sound, yet wasn't the domiant instrument.

Eric Wilson, the God of Thunder from Sublime inspired me to play. I also think he is one of the most underrated bassists because as most people hear Sublime, they think of Brad Nowell but Sublime would not be Sublime without their funky basslines. Sam Rivers from LB.. His stuff on three dollar bill y'all$ really adds to their whole sound as a band.

Let's see, Jaco and John Pattitucci god I love his t string licks and does anybody know what kind of cabinets tha he plays with? Looks like a Wayne Jones or Bag End, not sure.

The bass players that inspired me the most to play bass were Stuart Zender of jamiroquai, Guy Pratt of Pink Floyd, Jaco Pastorius, and Fieldy of Korn, in that exact order, until i got my bass..

It's actually kind of weird to think about this question. I don't remember exactly what it was that got me interested in bass. But I think that the two bassists I was listening to most at the time were Jack Bruce and John Paul Jones. Not very original, I think.

Chris Squire, John Entwistle, JPJ, Sir Paul, Geddy Lee, Mike Rutherford, John Decon. Of all of those I would have to say that Chris Squire was the biggest influence. What really hooked me was the live version of Perpetual Change from the Yessongs album.
