What bass should I try out for this sound? Exotics?

Our two man band uses the bass for both guitar and bass "sounds." I'm continuing to dial in a unique sound and figured some of you might have input on some basses to try....

I have a repainted Fender Squire Jazz (in video), a Fender Precision Deluxe Special and a Fender Mustang short scale. The Jazz could use an upgrade on pickups so you have a suggestion for those, I would love to hear it.

Has anyone tried the Ernie Ball short scales?

Keep in mind the bass does double duty as far as tone, so that is the trick here ;)

We do live covers like the attached video and we write our own tunes with similar vibes...

Thanks, in advance, for your feedback!

P.S. I will be happy to share a video on what we use to generate our sounds if there is interest. It's been a long road to figuring this out, (thanks in part to folks on here in the past) and there is always more to know.

This brings back memories. The first musician I ever played with was a drummer. It was just me and him for a long time. I used a Vox Cougar hollow body with phase shifter and overdrive through an old National tube amp with dual oval speakers. I could get decent kinda muted bass thump when I needed it, but I could stomp on the pedals and then get distortion and nicely controlled feedback when I wanted to play rhythm or lead.

I can run any of my basses through effects systems and get cool results, but to me I always just feel like a hollow body is more of a bridge between guitar and bass if that's what you are going for. I hope to start recording in the near future and will probably rely on a hollow body to play the power chords and lead. Its just my opinion that is clouded by awesome memories of all night teenage jam sessions and is probably mostly worthless. Best of luck and can't wait to see what you do in the future.

Ahh, that's awesome. Seems many bass players have had some experience playing with just a drummer and seeing how far they can take it. Or maybe out of necessity. Hollow body might get some rough feedback because we use a guitar amp and a bass amp. Bass amp would likely be okay but the guitar amp could go hairball on us lol

Thanks for the encouragement ;) Have a great day!

It might be fun for you to play around with a Jaguar VI. Listen to the solo in I Am a Lineman For The County by Glen Campbell. You could call it a Deep Guitar or a Tenor Bass. I think it would be fun to have one.

A friend of mine uses this in his band and he is the "bass player". I'll see if I can borrow one and try it out ;)
