What bass would you buy?

Look for a Sandberg used. The VM5 which I just purchased is amazing!! I got a steal of a deal on it. I found a demo model with a few minor scratches and they sold it to me for $1550 shipped from Germany. I am super happy!!
A new one sells for $2596 USA pricing. Oh and I run a new Mesa Tube head which will RUN all over any class D toy!!

I recently purchased a 2013 american standard p-bass. Love it. Last night was our first practice with the full PA set up. Well Holy Crap. I have never had my sound cut thru like that. I know a p-bass is kind of boring, one split pickup, just tone and volume. But in a band situation it sounds so "right". This is my first 'high quality' bass, and the difference is obvious to me.
But in the end, get the bass that has the best tone for you. I would think anything in your price range would perform great. My ibanez (active eq) was low to mid level bass. grew to hate the active eq. My other long time bass was supposedly quality, a Gibson G3 Grabber. I don't know. It just sounded like junk to me. I taking my p-bass to the grave.

Nobody has mentioned Warwick.. you can get a used German made Corvette 5 double buck or a Thumb bolt on 5 in that price range. You simply cannot beat the low B on Warwicks and it would be a nice tonal change from the Modulus.

I'm sorry but a passive MIA Precision V sounds nothing like a Q5. Not even a little bit.

There isn't much out there that competes with the Modulus Q5. Maybe change the electronics to passive, without any newly drilled holes or modding being done. Two grand isn't gonna trump what you already have.

OK let's play a game! You have $1500 to spend on a new 5-string bass. ($2,000 if you really fall in love with something). You play everything from classic rock, disco, 80's hair stuff to what's on the radio today and have used a Modulus Q5 as your go-to bass during 5 years of gigging. That's what feels like home but you're looking for a little more warmth while still retaining that strong, clear low B.

I haven't been able to play one but on looks and price... Id pick this gorgeous storm trooper ensemble.

Agreed. I fell in love with my Q5 all over again after switching from EMG's to Bartolini's. The Bart's are so much warmer and more conducive to the style of music I'm playing these days....but I do sometimes miss the growl of the EMG's.

What type of electronics do you have in your Q5?

I have a Q5 myself with the Barts (bought new in '97), still a freaking great bass. For $1,500 I would save a bit more and buy a used F Bass BN5. Bought one and fell in love with them, great bass and a nice contrast to the Modulus.
