i just ordered a spector, and i realized it's a brand i haven't owned before, although i've owned a bunch. so i started thinking about brands i have owned (in no particular order)

fender
squier
hofner
ibanez
schecter
gretsch
kala
traveler
warwick
yamaha
shredneck
cort
washburn
ric
small guitars
glarry
SX
scorpio. it was the first bass i played (daily for 2 years) but i didn't own it. it was a custom build that someone pulled the preamp out of, making it a passive.

owned very briefly
sterling
music man

brands i'm curious about or interested in
jacksons (my husband has a herd of jackson guitars)
G&L
lakland
nordstrand
spector was on this list, too.

brands i've played a lot but not owned
gibson
spector
epiphone
line 6 variax

so how about you? which brands have you owned, want to own or just want to try?

btw, if you notice my list keeps changing, i keep remembering more basses i used to own. how did i forget the ric????

I'll be happy to post the basses I've owned. As for posting one's I've not, my list would exceed my bandwidth, and reader's patience.

1) a 60's nondescript Japanese 4 string
2) Hagstrom I
3) Gibson EB3 (2)
4) 1974 Rickenbacker 4001
5) 1996 MIM Fender JB
6) 1990 N series MIA Fender PBj
7) Warwick MIG Active MIG Corvette.

I don't want to seem like I'm dismissing your thread, but the only time I've bought, sold, or tried another instrument/rig, is when what I own is thwarting my artistic output. The last time that occured was 9 years ago when I bought my Warwick. I landed a gig with a band that played commercial music written in this century, hence the need for a 5 string. I had known almost 5 years before that if I ever needed a 5er, based on playing a buddy of mine's 4 string Corvette, that was the one I was going to buy. I found mine on GC online used gear with in weeks of landing this gig. I got it at about 80% off retail when it was new. It needed some work, nothing that a good set up and a few loose screws tightened couldn't resolve in short order.

At my age and the amount/type of gigs I'm playing, my gas balloon has long since deflated.

Have owned:
Azola, Bass Collection, Benavente, Brubaker, BSX, Carruthers, Clevinger, Elrick, Epiphone, Ernie Ball Musicman, F-Bass, FBB, Fender US and MIJ, Fernandes, Fleishman, G&L, Gibson, Gibson Tobias, Godin, Hondo, Kay, Kala, Martin Keith, Kramer, Lightwave, MOG, Music Man (Pre-EB), Nordstrand, Peavey, Reghin, Rickenbacker, Ritter, Status, Stradi, Steinberger, Stuart Spector Design, Turner, Valenti, Washburn, Yamaha

I'm not seriously interested in other brands, although I'm not sure I've landed on the ideal EUB for me yet. Other than that, it'd have to be a ridiculous deal on a double bass, EUB, modern boutique, or vintage bass (in order of preference). But other than that, I'm happy with my Martin Keith basses, and don't feel the need to check out other brands.

Winner I think for the highest number of high-end boutique brands

When I was (foolishly) searching for the bass that was going to take me to the next level, I went through a crapload of different brands but most lasted less than a day before being put in the for sale pile. That said, I’ve only owned one hand built custom and fear of the tiniest ding sent it on as well. Never owned a Ric, but tried one and didn’t assimilate at all. Same with Spector, the first time I saw one I was floored, but then I picked it up. I was playing Peavey basses at the time and there were very few basses that could match them for weight, slimness of the (5 string) neck, and power of the Super Ferrite pickups so I went through a lot of basses looking for something better. The Spector bass was so heavy compared to my Peavy Dyna fiver I didn’t give it enough time to see if I liked the playability. It was only when I tried a Fender Jazz Plus with it’s dinky body, super slim (4 string) neck and Kubiki preamp sold me on giving up my Dyna Bass.
All that said, If Peavey was still making basses in Mississippi I would have gone down that rabbit hole again rather than spending a few years trying to make a standard Jazz into a J Plus clone when I retired my #1 from playing out.
