what brands of basses have you owned... or not?

...I'm not sure I've landed on the ideal EUB for me yet. Other than that, it'd have to be a ridiculous deal on a double bass, EUB, modern boutique, or vintage bass (in order of preference).
Back in the earlier part of this century I had a NS CR4M for a while. Very nice but it sounded pretty much like one of my fretless Zons so off with it's head (think, Steinberger :roflmao:) it went.

Okay...
I've only ever sold 2 basses out of my herd (Eastwood Magnum and an '18 Gibson T-Bird), but I still own basses made by them. So, basses I own:
Alembic
Carvin
Danelectric
Eastwood
EBMM
Epiphone
Fender
Fury
Gibson
G&L
Gretsch
Guild
Hofner
Kramer
Rickenbacker
Rogue
Schecter
Starfire
Tokai
Warmoth
Don't have these 2 yet, but I'm having basses made by
Serek
Birdsong

As for all the others? Doubt I'll ever own them, for several reasons;
- The spot they'd fill in my herd, is already well-filled
- Never heard of them (And, there's a :poop:-load of those)
- I have no desire - or use for - a "neener, neener, look what I have - and you don't" bass
- Don't want a "relic'd" bass - at all
- Don't want an expensive, but supposedly "Better", copy of my Fender Bass
- Don't want any kind of Jazz Bass at all
And, the biggest reason why I don't have one of all those other basses?
- They don't make lefties. And, there's a :poop:-load of those, too...

Yeah, I'm like the form factor of an EUB, since I can transport it more easily than my DB, but I haven't loved the sound as much as either the DB or my BGs. My current EUB is the MOG, and that's an Ampeg Baby Bass kind of setup, which seems to offer something different. It has a few quirks that I want to get fixed (two rattles and a sliding endpin) before I test it for real at a gig.

From most to fewest:
Lakland
Fender
EBMM
Reverend
One each of the rest:
Bass Centre (Bruce Thomas signature P)
Gretsch
Ibanez
JohnK Bassmaster
Ric
Vox

In the 60s:
Japanese Kenora P bass (sold) thought I could do better.
Hofner violin bass (sold) was either a clone or needed a setup.
Eko violin bass (sold) same as above, dead spots.
Fender Telecaster bass (sold) time to get a real job and raise a family.

In the 80s:
68 Gibson EB2D (bought to support an employee who needed cash) Sold in the 2000s to support my chosen basses in retirement.

In the 2000s:
Fender Mustang PJ (sold) slab body was not for me.
Rogue VB100 (in memory of the original Gibson violin bass) surprisingly good and not necessarily a wall hanger.
Squier SS Jag PJ comfortable SS, flats, upgraded pups...keeper.
Fender MIM P upgrade pups and Jazz neck...keeper.

so how about you? which brands have you owned, want to own or just want to try?

btw, if you notice my list keeps changing, i keep remembering more basses i used to own. how did i forget the ric????
Had to laugh at your huge list.

• In 1965 my first bass was a green Japanese short scale piece of :poop: made before Japan figured out how to make good basses. found out just how bad it sounded in 1966 when I bought my first amp (1966 Fender Bassman).

• Then in 1966 I bought a 1965 Fender Jazz bass. I was in high school at the time and played everywhere with it including touring with a nightclub group playing 5-nights a week, 50-weeks a year, for 3-years. It was stolen in 1976 when the house we were staying in was burglarized.

• In 1985 I managed to find a 1982 Jazz Bass with the same neck profile, shape (60's Slim C-shape) and 7.25" radius as the neck on my '65. I've been playing that bass for the last 39-years.

• In 2009 I needed to get a 5-string because group I was with played about 5 or 6-songs that needed one and I was tired of dropping the E string to reach the notes. Friend recommended an inexpensive 5-string made in Korea that he said was excellent quality. I was not looking to drop a lot of money so I went ahead and bought a Rogue LX405 Pro (not Pro II or Pro III, which were not made in Korea). I was surprised at the quality of fit and finish and even with its wide neck to facilitate another string it's still fairly easy for me to play because the neck is so slim. It can be played in either active or passive mode. I play it in passive mode because I don't have to change the gain on my amp to facilitate it and although the bass and treble boost/cut controls don't work in passive mode, the pickup balance does and I can get a good sound out of it by just turning that balance slightly towards the big bridge pickup. It's convenient, plays well and has a decent sound, but my Jazz is still my best sounding bass.

• I would very much like to try a Dingwall Leland Sklar signature model (with 3 pickups) but almost never use my 5-string now, so I don't really have a need for it. Still, it's a beautiful instrument with a plethora of sounds available.

So I've had a grand total of 3 basses, two of which I still have:

Here's a shot of my 1965 Jazz in late 1971 or early 1972 with my Standel amp peeking out from behind our guitarist, Steve. Then in 1976 all my touring gear was stolen. Miss that '65 Jazz!:

In the late 1960s, I owned a Harmony H22.
I then replaced it with a Gibson EB-something (don't recall the model, but it was blue).
I then switched to guitar around 1970, and did not play bass again until 2020,
at which point I bought an Epiphone Jack Casady Signature bass.

That's it for me.

If I may ask , what are the pickups you installed on your Fender MIM p with the jazz neck and what did that bring ?

The pups are Fender PV63s. I wanted something that was deeper, bass soul and they certainly do that.
Well then I should be very close to my dream bass !
I did put together a MIM Fender p bass neck made of maple that is straight and stable, a 2 piece alder body from a 2000 Asian Squier p bass and the exact same PV 63 pickups and Fender nickel rounds.
The bass weighs only 7.9 pounds and playability is at its best and rumbles quite a lot !
Thanks again for the info !
