But not on every occasion - there is no doubt that in the past people have built instruments based on their theoretical knowledge.

So there is no way you could have built the first analogue synthesisers with having prior theoretical knowledge of how musical wave forms can relate to voltage and how oscillators work ...

In the case of synthesisers, theory came before the instrument!
