What can I do about plugged ear

I think you can buy an ear wax cleaner at your local drug store. It kind of sprays warm water in your ear to help loosen up the wax. Also, as a preventitive measure, frequently clean your ears with a q-tip after you get out of the shower when the ear wax is softer.

smack the other side of your head with the palm of your hand? i've read that it's better to not ues q tips cause it pushes wax further in your ear, and to the point where it can effect yoru hearing. article said wait for it to fall out on it's own. but i've never realy heard of anyone getting their hearing messed up from the wax so i dont' know how true this is

For me, it is a 2-step process every couple months.

I used to use a headset at work where the earpiece actually went into the ear - like a rubber earplug. All of the sudden (actually having built up for months) I would not be able to hear out of that ear.

I used a commercial cleaner, and it smelled like HP. Hmmm...maybe HP would work fine as well.

That would soften it up, and some wax would come out.

Then I would go over to the sink and fill it with lukewarm water, and use a small rubber bulb to suck in warm water, insert it into my ear, and then sqeeze (like the dickens). This resulted every time in large black chunks coming out of my ear. It also always sounded like I got a new ear (exaggerating) like.....wow, I can hear the birds again. :-)

In any case, I think the bulb was one I got for my son when he was a baby - it was used to help suck mucuous and stuff from his nose. Look for it in the baby section at your local pharmacy.

Good luck!

I've had mine cleared at the doctors, twice, and I tell you it is awesome being able to hear again after being deaf in one ear for months.
I find that when showering tip you head over to once side and sticking offending ear in the path of the shower head, warm water and pressure loosens it up. Once out of the shower roll a tissue to a point then poking it carefully into ones ear removes some/lots of wax. Might not help in this case, cuz it sounds like you gotta whole lotta wax up there, but do it every few days. I find it works a treat.

When I was on vacation last year, I had horrible pain in my ear caused by ear wax buildup. It felt like an ice pick was being driven into my ear. i had tried using OTC ear drops, but they didn't do much of anything but melt the wax just enough to drive it deeper into my ear, increasing the pain. My brother told me to put Hydrogen peroxide in it, but I didn't listen to him.

Finally I went down to the emergency room. Unfortunately, we were at my parents' lake house in rural north Georgia, and I ended up going to the local ER which was almost like the SNL skit "Appalachian ER." After an excrutiating four-hour wait, I finally got to see the doctor, who wrote me a prescription for ear drops.

I went to three different pharmacies before learning that the ear drops he wrote me a prescrption for were no longer on the market. I went back to the lake house, and took my brother's advice and tried the hydrogen peroxide. Huge chunks of godawful crud came right out of my ears and the pain went away almost immediately. :)
