What Can I do to make my Bantam Bb5 sound better?

Hi, I am fairly new at playing the Bass, thus I know very little. I have a Bantam Bb5 with active soap-bar pickups (I am guessing that's what they are called, all I really know is that they are the wide ones). I like its thin neck, and how light it feels; however, someone told me that the sound is okay, and there are basses that sound better for roughly the same price. Because I am a poor college kid, I cant really afford buying a new bass. So, what can I upgrade on my Bass to raise the quality of its sound?

P.S. Sorry if this is a repeat of another thread.
