What can Pro Tools do that Logic can't?

I was re-reading what has been said here and noticed another "inaccuracy" . . .

For 400 less than a 003 , you can have an HD192 from MOTU wich sounds WAY better than the 003.

It's YOUR comparison, but, to me, those two products are like apples and oranges (NOT - even - like apples and pears!)

MOTU - 192kHz/24 bit 12 line-in/12 line-out system. Audiodesk software("Digital Performer" without many of the editing functions. also WITHOUT MIDI secuencing)
You WILL need - at least - a simple audio console for mic-level inputs and for audio monitoring.

003 Rack - 96kHz/24 bit 8 line-in/4 mic-in/8 line-out system. PT-LE software ("limited" features version of ProTools. includes MIDI sequencing). stand alone (NO console needed)

But my biggest problem was with the prices that you mentioned . . . when I searched, the MOTU was $1800 and the 003 Rack was $1200!

Thats $600 LESS for the 003, NOT $400 MORE!

????

EDIT:
The MOTU probably DOES sound better than the 003 . . . theoretically it should, having DOUBLE the AD resolution . . . but it IS a lot more expensive, too. AND more limited in use (no mic inputs, no MIDI sequencing)

well the HD 192 isn't really the appropriate MOTU product to compare to a Digi 003 unit. A better comparison would be their Firewire products such as the 828mkII and the 896HD. Both of which ARE several hundred dollars less expensive than the Digi 003 units. Granted you don't get any software with that but it does have a degree of flexibility.

I'm well aware that ProTools is the industry standard however it IS one of the more expensive and less flexible options for setting up a small project studio.

Personally I use Logic and a MOTU 896HD as this allows me to fully record my entire band (I have 8 mic pres allowing me to fully mic the drum kit as well as vocal mic and the guitarists cabinet and send my bass in through a DI). The Digi 003 only offers me 4 mic pres (and at lower quality than I get through the MOTU). In addition I make significant use of MIDI for key/synth overdubs both for this and my personal music.

Each situation is different and you must evaluate your needs and options to find the best fit. Personally I valued the flexibility and MIDI capabilities more than standardization. I'm not likely to be recording in a professional studio in the near future so that wasn't a consideration. Others obviously will have different needs.

well said . . .

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, either . . .
but I feel it neccesary to correct some of the inacuracies in your post . . .

Same here .;)
I have the feeling you don't get the point I'm making.

NOBODY has to buy a Digidesign interface to use PT, but the other options are MORE EXPENSIVE than those Digidesign interfaces!
If so , explain to me how I can boot PT on my powerbook with a MOTU traveler or on my G5 with my HD192 ?????????
Yes , you HAVE to get an Avid audio interface to be able to boot whatever version of PT. It's an hardware dungle.
If you know how to boot PT without an Avid audio hardware piece PLEASE let me know how!

With the "professional" system, PT-HD, the software comes "bundeled" with 1,2 or 3 Accel PCI processor cards . . . you DO have to use AT LEAST one Accel PCI processor card for PT to work, but you CAN use another companies' interface(s).
I know that .

Since PT can't work with any other harware ( here I mean hardware I/O , PCI form , USB or fire wire) than an AVID , If you want to buy PT , you have to buy their hardware . So people are buying PT, and there is a hardware piece that comes with the software . ( or you can see it the other way around :D )
If you buy a RME fireface , you can use DP , Logic , Sonar , any software out there EXEPT PT. You are doomed to use the Avid piece of gear as an I/O interface.
Hope you get my point.

And PT IS compatible with LOTS of products (CPUs, Plug-ins, hard-disks, etc) . . .
I know , like all the other software out there.
I have a MOTU424 PCI card along with a UA UAD1 PCI card , I can run whatever audio software I want except , you guessed it , PT!!!
I can even use an 002 or 003 with DP , not the other way around.

And, IIRC, none of the OTHER platforms are "compatble" with each other - you can't open a Cubase "session" (song) with Logic, for example . . .

OMF interchange works quit well between Logic and DP .
Haven't tried with other software.
I think that with PT you have to buy Digi translator.:rollno:

Maybe YOU don't need the extra processing available through the use of Accel cards, but I DO!
And, as I've said, I use a relatively fast, dual-processor G-5 with lots of ram and 3 Accel cards (HD-3).
I DON'T use all of the available resources . . . but I am OFTEN using as much as 60-70% of the "extra" power that the 3 Accel cards provide . . .
A friend just bought the new octo processor from Apple , ( that's 8 / 3ghz processor!!!! ) He was able to load 96 instances of Altiverb:eek:
(Altiverb is a very , very hungry cpu hug plugin )

as always, YMMV, IMO, IME, etc . . .
Same here:p
