Well...you asked.

I got single ply black on butterscotch on my Telecaster. I like it just fine too. So there!

However, that 3-ply parchment somebody suggested looks awfully nice to my eyes too.

I might go with brown Garolite (modern brand name for "Bakelite") on that bass. You could clear coat it anywhere from dead matte to a polished gloss.

Personally, I like the single ply black look with butterscotch and maple. If it was rosewood, tort would work - but not with maple. All IMO, of course.

I just put a gold pearl ($14 on Amazon, shipped) on my PBass, changing from black.

I still love the black (it's a classic for a reason), and I'll change back at some point, I'm sure. But, I like that it looks a little different now. It's almost like she bleached her hair for the summer...
