What compressor with tube amp?

VCA-based rackmount comps work best for this. You want a very fast release time (not so fast that it distorts though), attack set just so it kicks in a moment after you strike the string, a hard knee, and a high ratio.

There are a few non-VCA or non-rack comps that happen to be designed n a way that allows this sort of effect. Off the top of my head, the FEA Dual-Band, Celmo Sardine Can, Carl Martin Comp-Limiter, Maxon CP9Pro+, and Seymour Duncan Double Back are decent contenders for this function.
