Inquisitive two year old child… plus dad’s basses. Might get some dents but might also teach someone to play one day ! I have three under 5 years old and avoided major damage thus far. The MusicMan basses are indestructible but Uncle Bills 69’ Jazz in the middle might be best off in the closet!

Potential benefits outweigh the risks by far. I say leave them out. I did, got dings and stuff, and never regretted it. The one that made the dings can pick up any instrument and have a go at it now.

Perhaps you could add some kind of elastic retainers to each neck slit to keep the basses upright when you can’t supervise the young’un’s checking out your instruments…

A lot could go wrong, the least of which would be damaging the instruments. How funny would it be when you're in the ER getting one of your kids stitched up from a tuner.

5 year olds need supervision. Quality time spent with your kids showing them how to play would do more to encourage them than just complete access to something they don't understand.

Do you think giving them car keys will make them race car drivers?

It's not the bass bruises you should worry about. Bringing in little ones to the ER banged up from a bass clunking them on the head and tuner stuck through the leg should be your concern.

My brother started letting his son play with his old Silvertone he had set up for slide when he was able to hold it while sitting down, but he made it conditional. Nephew could bang away all he wanted as long as dad was sitting with him, and he had been a good boy. The conditions served to encourage my nephew to pursue music, first as a crackerjack drummer then as an in demand EDM DJ.
