Double Bass What DB strings do the TBDBers use?!? (2009)

None. Strings have nothing to do with your sound, the sound is all in your hands (as long as you have a teacher). ;)

OK, maybe that's not entirely true, but I had the honor of playing with Jon Hendricks a couple of weeks ago and he took a killin' "bass" solo. No strings, just air bass. Totally cut me.

Personally, I have Spiro solos with a Oliv G. I tried a bunch of different G strings. When I put the Oliv on, I was surprised at how much of an effect it had on the sound and feel of the whole bass, in a good way.

That sucks. I just spent a whole bunch of money on a new bass and some strings.

Can you find out what kind of mic Hendricks was usin'?

LaScala hybrid - Dominant G, D, and A with Spiro stark E

LaScala lammy - Evah weichs

The weichs are interesting and nice, but the Dominants on the hybrid absolutely slay any other setup I've ever tried (disclaimer: on my bass, with my hands trying to get the sounds in my head out through a bass, etc. yadda yadda yadda)

The strings on the hybrid are older than Methuselah by now, and still as sweet as a box of Godivas. Dry skin sucks in a lot of ways, but it sure saves a lot of money on strings.

Toad, do you have any experience with Helicor Orchestra Heavy Gage E? Just wondering if you might be able to compare that w/ the Spiro Stark E.
I hated it on everything I've tried it. However the first couple seats in the Columbus Symphony were strung up with that Heavy Helicore Orch E and it sounds stupid good so what do I know.

Yeah, I dug it on my Lang hybrid, but the Spiro Mittel E is a little more alive sounding.. I'll hit the books and search the forums for TB'ers thoughts/experiences w/ the Spiro Stark E, which I'm kind of considering at the moment.

Stark E is slower under the bow than the mitt but roars when you get it moving. Trade off ok for me, I don't need to get it moving quick but for some (like bribass) it's to pokey. The Mitt has a bit more midrange punch and growls faster pizz. The Stark has low end for days and less mids. It's also harder to play.

On the AQ ancient bass it's rediculous though. Roars! Through and amp it's devastating.
