What Did I Buy?

I found a p bass on cl and don't know what it is. The guy I bought it from said he bought it at a yard sale 25+ years ago. It came with the ashtray and gold knob. The black knob is mine. It appears to be made of oak and it is HEAVY. It has a stripe along the body edging. Any ideas?

Well it's some kind of Fender clone, but is that...mahogany? It must weigh a ton!

Check the neck pocket for more info- maybe there's a serial down there or at least some markings. Also in the pickup cavity or on the pots there may be some clues...

Ah, the good ol' 3 string bass! They used to make them that way until string manufacturers started making G strings long enough to fit on basses. It was revolutionary.

The body isn't oak, more likely ash. I don't recognize the maker, but it's likely 1970's Japanese.

is there a truss rod under that cover? many of the laminate necks i've seen have not had them

Back from the days when "Japanese" meant "cheap knock-off". Not anymore.

There is a truss rod and its exceedingly heavy. 88 3 6 is stamped in the neck pocket

Looks like a 60's early 70's cheap Japanese knockoff (Kent, Kimberly, Teisco etc,) from the neck

I was going to guess it's a parts bass, someone's home project. Either that or, yeah, a 70s Japanese knockoff.

Looks like a mahogany p bass. Probably sounds pretty good. Might be a keeper.

There is a lot of extra work in the laminated neck and body - it probably was not a low-end model. Looks like it might clean up really well.
