What did you learn today?

I learned that our new HR person may be more of a rules fanatic than I expected.

I don't need someone to tell me what the letter of the rules is, I need someone who will tell me how to get things done while staying just within the rules.

Those are the most valuable people in any bureaucratic system - the ones who will say "well, the rules say (this), but here's how to actually get it done."

I had a conversation very similar to that just today.
Talking to a Teacher with whom I’ll be working for the next 7 weeks, we decided that ‘there will always be what it says on paper, and then, there is what goes on, day to instructional day, in the Real World’.
Seemed as if we connected.

This...from the Music Match thread...

Damn!
I envision millennials jumping out of buildings while I’m cranking up the turntable. ;)

Exactly. There are times when you deliver the exact words that some bureaucrat deems are legally appropriate, then you comment 'But I'm not your mom and I'm not going to watch you."

That may come with the optional nudge nudge, wink wink.

That I really need to quit nicotine products... again. I'm going through the exact same cycle as the last time I quit: my tolerance becomes so high that I chronically use without noticing it every 5 minutes of every day, and then I consistently feel like crap at all times. Dizziness, nausea, stomach pain, fatigue. I'm getting fat again, too - a side effect of the stomach pain. It only hurts on an empty stomach, so I keep my stomach full to keep from feeling like I'm getting stabbed.

help me, Talkbass, I'm getting the willies just thinking about the withdrawl.

I weaned myself off and pretty much didn't look back, at least when I quit for the last time. And I mean THE last time. But I must ask from whence comes the stomach pain? Mitigating that might be a task for a doctor, because you don't know what it could be, or what it could be from.

I wish I was able to do that. Alas, my willpower just isn't up to snuff. There's no "weaning" for me, I just end up increasing use over time. Addictive personality and all that.

it's the nicotine. This happens every time, and every time I've quit, it goes away within a day. Seeing a doctor would just result on the recommendation "quit the drugs, dummy", and they'd be right.

  1. I learned not to post band pics from our gigs online anymore. A certain guitar player doesn't like how he looks now. A fan also objected to how she looked in pictures she posed for, same reason. It's a shame, we have a guy that comes to our gigs, takes tons of cool professional pictures, all out of the goodness of his heart.
  2. I learned to get the bowl at Chipotles, and roll my own. I stood in line watching them make heaping bowl after heaping bowl. I ordered the burrito, it looked like a child's portion sitting in the middle of all the gargantuan bowl servings.
  3. I Learned the cart escalator at Menards to the upstairs takes like 10 minutes of your life you can never get back.
  4. I Learned don't take the younger dog on a ride if he has eaten very recently. You will have said dog food on the floor of the car.
