im thinking about running a direct box into a powered cab of some sort for smaller shows , so tell me what you are using ???

what DIRECT BOX do you use live ????

I wouldn't use just a plain DI. I'd use a preamp/DI. Bassbone, EBS Microbass II, something along those lines.
... Tone Hammer. Shoot, the Tone Hammer costs less than a Radial JDI or J48, which are fine DIs but may not have enough oomph to drive an amp.
I usually use the DI out on my amp, but if I need one it's either a Tone Hammer or Groove Tubes Ditto. IEM gigs are getting more and more common for us and the Ditto is a little bulky. So, I picked up the Tone Hammer to slide into the gig bag. As Munji mentioned above, the TH will drive a power amp and give you some EQ.

I want to pick up a tone hammer...I've had the tonebone, and liked it..I'm using a paranormal now (or just the DI off my head)...but wish the paranormal had a volume control...

Every one of my preamps has a direct out, but I rarely use them. It usually works out best (for us) if the FOH man gets just the bass>pedalboard>DI signal, and the preamp is there for making the sound happen onstage.

Another vote for the Countryman T85...
I used to give the sound guy a send from my Sansamp, but it didnt work for all soundies and thier systems, so i figure just give them plain ol' signal and let them "shape" the sound out front...

Sadowsky pre/DI at the end of my pedalboard.

I agree with every one of these suggestions for onstage - except using the DI on the head, even though a lot of them sound great. I prefer to have my FOH signal completely separated from my stage amp. If the stage amp goes down at least the show goes on without interruption...
I use JDI and Whirlwind Direct JT boxes.
As has already been stated, to drive a powered speaker you'll need something a lot hotter than a DI.
