What do ya'll know about the SUNN 2000S?

screeching bright! i remember actually it hurt my ears for a while after each rehearsals. good memories, just couldnt personally recommend a 2000S for bass
Sounds like it was broken. It's a bass amp, not a guitar amp. Could have been modded (badly) at some point, too.
I know that D.M.N. has to practically turn his lows all the way down and highs all the way up to get it to be bright. From what I recall.
Noel Redding used a few 2000S amps and cabs, and while his tone was bright for the time, it wouldn't be considered so now.
yea, no biggie. i get the feeling that my experience was not typical, though it was my experience. i recall it being a 412 marshall 1960b for cab. i remember the tone being up in the crash-cymbal range and it was not good. tubes probably fried
Something wasn't right. The 200s and 2000s are pretty accurate in terms of voicing, they were the "Hi Fi" amps of their day, quite literally. The D140's are also pretty smooth and the cabs are well matched....Something wasn't right for sure.
Cab may have exacerbated the sound issue, too. The cab that the 2000S is supposed to be paired with (also called the 2000S, as they were sold together, originally), is a massive 2x15 that while not producing quite the sub lows of some modern bass cabs, has an authoritative, yet clear low end.
Almost certainly something wrong with the head though. The very newest ones would be 40 years old now, and that's a lot of time for someone to make a stupid mod, or for other crap to go wrong and go unrepaired.
I just picked up an earlier 2000s off Kijiji - the guy who sold it to me speculates it was somewhere between 69 and 72. The knobs have a more primitive look, just a little black notch on a cylinder sorta thing. It's by far the most versatile amp I've ever seen, aside from the weight issue. I tried all sorts of things through it before I bought it - double bass (my primary instrument), P bass, 3 different guitars (Tele, Jaguar, Mustang), and charango with B-Band. Everything just came out sounding like itself in the best way possible, and there is plenty of wiggle room in the EQ so I can even take all the bass out and do some chicken pickin' on guitar or something if I want - though I never hear any frequencies lose all their response, which is a great sign. This is the only amp that has made my double bass arco sound better - most if not all others make it sound worse, with the possible exception of my Acoustic Image.
My only complaint is that the bass knob on the EQ is quite imbalanced - all the difference is made from "all the way down" to about 9 or 10 o'clock, and every other position after just sounds the same.
