I've used distortion to investigate deadspots. I found that distortion exposes deadspots very well.

I can’t help it if you’ve never heard about it and I have, no need to get aggressive with strangers, no need to involve your ego at all. You should probably just go make yourself happy somehow that doesn’t involve your vast 23+ year knowledge of instrument repair, it doesn’t seem to be ringing the bell for you.

Necro reply, but what I'll add for future readers is that an octave pedal is an extremely fast way to identify dead spots. The fundamental is what cancels out, which causes an immediately noticeable difference when using an octaver.
