What do you do with your Tweeter?

Would you run a 1/2 ohm speaker? When you disconnect a tweeter that's what can happen. The likelihood of damaging your amp is slight, but so is that of an offshore oil rig blowing up. :eek:
If you don't want to run a tweeter remove it and the crossover so that the potential for damaging your amp is zero.


This seems to be overstating things just a bit, Bill - in your example, one section of the crossover is seeing that low of a load - and not the amp... It's been said many times that taking the horn out of a cab's circuitry doesn't alter it's overall impedence - were those people wrong???

Please note that I'm one of the people who uses a horn, so odds are strong that I won't be disconnecting mine, anyways - BUT, I have done so in the past with a Peavey 410 when the horn got blown, and have also done it with my Mesa 610 - and without ANY ill effects... I have also seen and heard of it being done more times than I can count, and have NEVER heard of an amp being damaged by doing so...

No doubt about it - the *proper* move to disconnect a tweeter from a cab is to bypass the crossover, and wire the other drivers directly to the jack - but I don't think simply disconnecting the horn is quite the recipe for disaster that you've made it out to be...

For example - how many people in this very thread have just disconnected their tweeters??? - I haven't seen anyone complain of having any troubles by doing so...

Admittedly the risk is low. That won't be of much comfort to the guy whose amp lacks adequate protection and gets cooked. IMO pointing out the risk potential is a more responsible course than recommending that everyone just snip wires and not worry about it.
