What do you guys use for strings sound?

i just use guitar pro for strings

I use Reason, it's not a plugin, but can be slaved through Rewire and has some of the best string sounds I've heard.
French bow + Double Bass + POG works for demos for me but I'd hire people who can really do it for the finals. There are some great string samples out there. If you are on a budget go look for the long discontinued E-mu Proteus 2, or samples from it.
What kind of string sound are you looking for?
Sometimes I like realistic sampled sounds, sometimes the synth sound fits.

If you want realistic orchestral sounds, the best bang-for-buck is East West Quantum Leap----the Gold package is a very good deal. The quality is truly "pro". I have used other software like Garritan Personal Orchestra which is really affordable and sounds quite good, but I've had ortchestral mock-ups I did with that rejected--when I re-did them with EWQL I was on the money. The articulation possibilites, plus the way it was recorded make EWQL one of the industry standards. I use Platinum now, but Gold is a great way to get started.
If you don't need that degree of realism and control, then try Garritan.
Or, if you just want an instrument that has some amazing string, pads, synths, etc. presets (and some editing capability), look at Atmosphere by Spectrasonics. Turn on the TV or watch a film and it's quite likely you'll hear the East West stuff and Atmosphere working. The Vienna libraries are incredible and used by all the top guys too, but VERY expensive.

I have a m-audio pro keys 88 and use it as controller as well. Great for doing horn section, violin, and I even do basic bongo's as well. The 88 keyboard might be overkill but at the 3 or 4 hundred buck I payed for it I found it a good deal. The piano and key section sounds good as well and can be used as a stand alone keyboard. It really does sound good for the money and you can hear on in action online at there site.
