What do you like your amp/cab covered in?

I like to have my amp covered in cheerleaders, cause they're all bouncey.

I prefer the ones from the top of the pyramid; not stocky the ones on the bottom holding everyone else up.
In general, they hold up pretty well, they work out every day.

A bit of a random question..... But what do you like your amp/cab covered in and why?

Does it affect the sound in any way?

Does it hold up well to general gigging?

I wanna try stripping it, sanding, taking a torch to it to scorch it, and then using the pourable polyurethane.

I did it to a guitar when I was a teenager. It looked awesome.

I don't wanna hafta feed the cheerleaders or buy them drinks, but they're welcome to to fawn all they like.

whatever GK uses on their combo amps. looks like some sort of bedliner or something. if you were to get a scratch easy to fix with a black sharpie.

Panties and bras. Those that were formerly on the ladies in the front row. They don't affect the tone at all. Or at least you won't notice or care if they did.

And they really hold up surprisingly well, too. Better than tolex.

Good old black tolex- like the old Peavey or Ampeg pebbly stuff. Tough, cheap, easy to clean with a nylon brush, matches all stage set-ups, doesn't attract hair, and minor blemishes are hidden by magic marker or black rattle-can! I personally don't like cabinets that stand out from the crowd...

I have a Schroeder 15+ done with Rhino Liner wish all my cabs were like that scuff proof.

I'd have to go with this, because then you'd get the cheerleaders anyway.

But seriously, tolex #1, Duratex #2. Tolex is the classy way to go, but I do like that Duratex can look good and is very tough to destroy.

I'd take the ones from the bottom of the pyramid. I prefer girls who could probably beat up the average guy.

I have two bass amps with black Tolex, and one with a metal shell - so paint covering? And I have three guitar amps. One each with laquered tweed, black rat fur, and cream Tolex.

Out of all my experience with these amps...I'd pick the truck bed liner.

If I was able to choose, I'd go with Line-X/Duratex. Seems to be undestroyable and scratches can be fixed with a marker.

I have tolex on my current cab, and the repairs it has looks terrible. I think it looks better when the tolex is a little torn here and there, because it is impossible not to get tolex torn anyway.

I've had very good luck gigging Mesa cabs - their tolex is pretty tough, and when combined with the covers that come with their cabs, mine have held up to the rigors of gigging way better than I would've thought... I put probably atleast 150 gigs on my PH810 before switching over to the PH215, and after all that road wear, I had to replace the casters, and 2 of the glide rails(covered under warranty), and the cover is showing plenty of wear - but the cab still looks like new...

Probably the toughest tolex I've ever seen is the stuff Peavey used for years - that stuff is tough as nails, but will take the skin off your knuckles if you're careless...

I also like the laminate covering on my Road Ready 115, but they don't make those anymore... If I were to have a new cab built, I would probably go with Line-X or Duratex - those coverings are great, IMO...

All my speaker cabinets and racks are painted. Cheap, quick and easy.
Yeah, they get marked up, but again: it's cheap, quick and easy to touch them up when they start looking too beat up.
It's also cheap, quick and easy to completely change the color or other cosmetics whenever I want.

Cheerleaders aside, my fave was LDS's old mega-tough "bedliner," which they no longer can get.
Since then Don recommended a vinyl lining he called "bronco" or something, which has proved very tough and durable so far, and seems a lot like Mesa's vinyl.

I must be the only guy who doesn't like Duratex. At least I think that's what's on my Bergantino AE410. I don't find it to be all that tough. Despite having a cover, mine has accumulated quite a few chips and scratches that my old Eden XLT rat fur never got despite not having a cover.

Yeah, the rat fur starts to look worn over time and needs to be lint rolled every now and then but IME it seems to hold up to the more common chips and dings better.
