what do you miss about old school internet?

He probably is also upset with the invention of the electric bass also. Oh, and probably prefers horse and buggy to the car...

"Back then, people wouldn't just jump in a car and careen about like some jackwad dolt with a lead foot and a penchant for head-on collisions. No, back then the roads were civil; people understood how to drive. These days it's like every moron with a set of keys feels he has the right to cut you off without signaling, and take all the parking spots from people like me, who hang their heads in disgust at the complete disregard they have for the way things used to be. Now get off my lawn."

That might be a intended as parody but that's pretty much how the modern internet feels to those of us who remember the old-old-school days :)

No, that's pretty much America. Roads in other countries are quite civil. Take Japan for instance. They are civil on the road.

Then again, Japan also handled the tsunami with the upmost grace and diligence. Had that tsunami happened in New Orleans or LA, you would have seen riots, looting, etc.

Oh I don't doubt it. It happens to anything that goes from being limited to a select few, to being open to the masses. It's easy to maintain a code of conduct when the numbers are small. It's no different from a private club vs an entire nation.

But then there are new advantages to be glad about. New downsides, yes, but there were downsides to the old system that are corrected anytime your favorite little club is "mainstreamed". The potential to reach millions and millions of people at once is staggering and really awesome if you can get over the superiority complex that artificially and incorrectly tells you you're better than other people (no, I don't mean YOU, CrispyDelicious, just a hypothetical "you" that's anyone reading this)

Ultimately, if you don't like something, don't do it. Quitting and walking away is always better than standing around bitching... better for you and better for others. The way you look at other people is a reflection of the way you look at yourself and you'd have to hate yourself to be in a group you don't like.

If you think driving in the States is bad, try driving in Mexico, Africa or India.
