what do you think of my Prototype ?

The technical specs, like anything else, are a tool that can be used or mis-used. There are some good uses:

1) I agree with Lemon that a measured curve helps "calibrate my ears." Once I found a speaker that I really liked, I measured its curve as a reference for designing a new speaker. The result is a speaker that I am quite happy with.

2) Measured curves also help if you live in a remote area without a lot of bass-oriented music stores. Things are improving in my village, but for a long time, you could only compare one or two brands per store.

3) Sensitivity is not the only curve. Other curves, such as cone excursion, provide important information about power handling.

4) Published curves would dispel myths, such as the entire cone diameter debate.

that are precisely the reasons I posted the question.
Just look alone at the obviously different response curves of the Eden XLT vs. XST series....

It is easy to model the curves in Eminence Designer, including the effects on xmax, phase plot etc. but I dont really know how the curve should look like for the application/sound I have in mind.

I did also measuring with a Computer but IMO it is bot the same also the result is not the same. it sound ome different.
For Basscabs though that doesentr matter.

I agree that you have t like the sound, but there is many tricks how to make your ears like it. I could now list several brands and products wich make use of such tricks.

wwhat I want to say is that your ears are the best judge to what you like,
but they re very bad at telling you what works best.
Thats why it would be nice to see true technical data, because then you can sort out all the stuff wich doesent work and then let your ear choose.

believe me there is tons of gear wich doesent really work including amps cabs and basses.

your ears will tell you WOW this has a strong bass, what it actually is is a bump between 150 and 300 Hz.....
Guess what, thats not that good in the real world use.
thats exactly the area wher you get the BOOOMING you dont like in order to get a clear sound.
You will find out later and wonder why you cant get a clear sound, because your EQ unfortunately lets you only cut below and above that frequency.

yes in Hifi the speaker makes the bigger difference but
in the (most) case(s) of bass gear the cab is not the last stepping stone
I think its the amp wich makes a bigger difference, and even before that it is the Bass, or actually the pickups and strings.

or just find one similar, it would be a great tool, to find what you need =)

That might not be such a big difference, curves are not so much to search for the sound its more to split the crap from the useful.
if the spec says:

103 dB sensitivity what do you assum ?

probably that you habe 103 dB in the whole range of the speaker.

if now you see the curve having a bump of almost 10 dB between 700 Hz and 2khz wich reaches 103 dB @ 1 Khz what do you actually have ?

A Cab with only 93 dB sensitivity because you have to boost between the lower end and 700 Hz.
guess what you amp is all of a sudden half as powerful as it was just before you hooked up that cab.
Damned I got to get a stronger amp. =(((((

as flat as possible and if there would be curves around.....
you bet that the word of mouth spreads fast, and all the ones wich match up to a certain standart would be in the game and every one else it sou very quickly.

Or in other words if a company publishes the important specs, they show also that they re not trying to pull you over the table and that they are not affraid of the thruth that means that theyr product must be good.
even if their curve isnt plus minus 1 db flat.

About flat curves:

I have to also say that a curves doesent have to be flat like a fingerboard,
but the overall response should be even.
that means

no raising or falling curve for example from 50 Hz rising 15 dB to the other end.

little short bumps like waves is normal as long as it is in balance with plus minus its good.

No pot holes or speed bumps.

it also depends how it was measured.

Also, allways keep in mind that the range of a bass 4 string is only from 40 to 400 Hz plus overtones so if you look at the curves of the Phil Jones 6 speaker combo, thats a acceptable curve. the problem there is
300 watts and only 90 dB isnt really going to work exept
for dinner music. But that is what It was intendet for I guess.

for 6 *5" cones it is goes pretty low. that means probably long throw drivers Looks like its good for upright. and 4 string I would of course try my 6 string on it but I can tell you with certainty the limits will show very quickly.

The low end is falling about 6 db per octave wich is still boostable
there 2 small peaks but those are less than 4 db. and in useful places. so the overall picture tells me not bad worth to take a closer look.
you could say this is flat (even) enough.

now If I would not see thw curve,

the 40 Hz to 20 Khz would be totally missleading.
because there is a standart wich is says @ the - 3 dB point it is where it ends because from a curve falling with 6 or more dB per octave you wont hear much after a octave or two from that point.

@ 20 Hz it is allready 30 db down
and @ 5 khz it is almost 10 dB down.

mow I rather have, in this case 90 dB, till 65 Hz and Low cut at 40 Hz.
that will give me a very clean low end, raher that boosting 6 dB and then low cut if that is possible.
that would technically make more sense.

Not any body and not the same and you dont know how they did it.

To many factors, Only can only guess what it is and know if it is true or not
what they state.

The worst is to tell people its TML but actually its isnt and it cant be.
its just missleading and false. I would never thrust some one like that.

what would you say ?

I say one of the motives is, almost every one buying a bass cab thinks in therms of home hifi.

it prevents true innovation and the sales numbers might drop because it doesent meet standarts.

One example

if a PA Company would do what they do, it would be less than short untill that company is out of business.
Why ?

If you sell a Pa wich doesnt has true specs and meets standarts cant be used ----> no one wants it.

I think a Bass Rig is in a way a Pa type of gear and it wont work if it doesnt
meets standarts.

Well if you play in the living room well then you dont need standarts but on a 60 by 30 foor Stage it matters alot, if you dont want to sit down in front of your cab to hear something.

if you for example play frettless its very impotant to have a clear tone in order to hear what you re doing. If its fuzzy and a lot of noise (harmonic distortion) it will make you tired.

I am assuming that the published curve is accurate. At frequencies below a few hundred Hz, the sensitivity curve can be modeled by a function of 5 factors. The proof is at my website. We can count Xmax as a sixth factor, as it determines the power handling of the speaker.

But I also agree with Bill F, that reverse-engineering a speaker in this way is not necessarily the easiest way to do it.

Note in edit: I am only talking about sealed and ported speakers -- not horns or transmission lines.

yeah but you cant really reproduce a curve. like that
a driver has its curve in the upper frequency range that depends on the diameter from what frequency. In the lower part the enclosure has much more impact.

as I stated before for a bassplayer Xmax is one of the most important factors. if that X max is to low......here is no bass =)

Whats the difference ?

In a very loose way a reflex a transmission and a horn is all the same you could ven count openbaffle in there =)

closed, open-baffle and bandpass is a bit different

Yeah I do know that, because exept for the Xmax there is a whole bunch of stuff to be considered to make a really correct working cab.....
there is quite a few more important points than I have covered so far.
those points go hand in hand and, every gain has also a trade off. its only possible to optimize to the needs. Given, that you have a speaker part, with good parameters for the aimed on purpose, there is no reason not to gain a very good result, but that requires a good understanding of the matter.
unfortunately to get good insight on this matter isnt that easy.

Thats why I said we could make one here in the forum together,
I thought maybe one or the other gets the idea what it is all about.
the problem is:
buying a speaker @ PEpress, downloading Win ISD, punching it the parameters and change the Volume around a little, to gain some more low end, making a wooden box wwith a couple of reflex pipes, most likely wont give you a professional result.................. and if, it was just a lucky guess.

But so far no one seems to be interested.... soooo.........................I guess that will be my last post about that topic.

One reason why I do that is, I tryed lots of gear and spend lots of dough also, BUT !!! most of that gear doesent meet the published specs, and even worse its sonically totaly unsatisfactory, its no even close to whats possible. asking for specs those companys only gave me a tired laugh .....f*** them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to knoa what I buy if I pay lots of $ for gear. unfortunately (for me to) I Know a little more about those things than the average guy.......... I know it sounds like Im a know it all. Im not this s**t really I know well. Probably those people at those companys tought : what rhe f*** does he know and didnt even listen what I wanted to ask, gave me not more that a generic answer if they gave me one at all.
so why the heck should I give my money to them ?

All rhat pissed me of so much that I started to also make my own bass gear.
Its basics are the same as Hifi, there is ay couple of different points wich have more importance and some have less compared with home hifi. all this shifts the system a little.
Coming from home speaker making for about 20 years it was not hard to find out.
I dont make a living from that but ever since it was a very interesting field for me.
I make every couple of months a new speaker system, mostly to learn more about it.
Lately with those modelling softwares wich can simulate the room to, it beccame even more fun because its now basically every time a homerun when its built in real.
