If you're in a dad (or grandpa) band playing the oldies for fun at the local wing joint, sure, wear whatever. But if you're in a band that's legitimately trying to build a following and make money (cover, original, or corporate), then it matters.

That's why I always hit the stage buck naked!
I'm sure someone will now complain that you do/do not oil up first, and how doing the one they don't like is a deal breaker if you want to succeed.
It's all context. Most of the places I play, the typical corporate band dress would be way out of place unless it was worn as satire. This is the problem with TB rules of engagement. One size does not fit all.
I don't think anyone suggested that one size fits all here. I wouldn't wear corporate clothing to a club gig or vice versa. But yes, it 100% matters in a lot of situations.
Then it will turn into a fight of what brand of oil or type of oil one should use, and if you do dare use olive oil you are gonna fail in music.
Seeing this thread come back, I'm starting my fashion page soon, my first clothes goal is to match my basses, my p-bass is cream with a tort pickguard, thinking white shirt, white dress pants and a reddish blazer to match it... will post results soon! And some white converse with red on it!
I actually don't use oil, but Crisco. But not below the waist! It's a shortening....

OP: "Let's talk about what works and what doesn't."
"OK. X works, Y doesn't."
"I agree X works, Y doesn't."
(Three days later) "X usually works, sometimes I like a little Y."
(A week after that) "Nah, Y doesn't work."
(then): "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU HORRIBLE PEOPLE WASTE YOUR TIME HATING Y!!! YOU'RE SO JUDGMENTAL!!! DON'T YOU HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO THAT SIT AROUND ALL DAY LONG THINKING ABOUT NOTHING BUT HOW YOU HATE Y?? IT MUST BE EXHAUSTING!"
I mean, we could ignore the whole thread if it would make you feel better. Or the OP could just not post a thread in the first place. Maybe no one should post any threads to get people's experiences and opinions! That would be great.
Or, just maybe, if someone asks, we can go ahead and say what we think.

There's a big difference between someone saying "this is the music we play, where we play and what works for us" vs. "anyone who wears short on stage is a hack that brings down live music everywhere".
Not saying that has been said in this thread, but I've read it often enough on TB to know it happens. It's just one example of how many can't see past the bubble of their own musical world. It's more telling on them than the people they criticize.
I find the biggest time that whole "This is what works and you are a fool if you don't follow it" are amp and cab threads. Every time I give my advice on those I always stress that amp and cab size is such a case by case thing, someone playing at a bar may not need that much cab, but of course you always get the 8x10 guys needing to say that small rigs of doom or subcompact rigs are stupid... again most people call them out but it is annoying as heck.
The fashion threads are mixed, but I do thing same with cabs, extremely case by case.

Well, a detailed post and of course it's the order things often take, but I would argue that the point is there are way too many people who think that their way is the ONLY way. It's not so much about giving opinions, but in insisting that the other person's opinion is wrong. Taking something that is subjective and trying to make it factual. If people would stick to "here's why I do it" as opposed to "here's why my way is right and yours is wrong", than that would break the cycle, so to speak.
IMO, YMMV, etc.
So, for instance, if a person were to nuance their opinion of what they find a bad look for a performer by saying "This is a pet peeve of mine," thus acknowledging the subjectivity of their judgement?
