What does "crank-waving" mean?

Sounds rude, but I have no idea. The message was clearly enough "Behave!", but can't say I've ever waved a crank or cranked a wave.

I believe it's a mixed metaphor.

A "crank" is a kook or crackpot. A common phrase used in political discussion forums is "umbrella waving crank" or "cane waving crank" to describe a member who is always bringing in his favorite crackpot theory to explain some simple idea and who always backs up his kook talk with huge piles of "evidence" culled from spurious internet sources.

If that doesn't work in the context of the rhread then your guess is as good as mine.
