I am wondering this because I am not sure if he uses anything. I love Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and play a lot of there songs. Is he just running his Fender Jazz straight into his ampegs?

What Effects Does Ron Blair Use?

I have never heard a single Tom Petty song that had any effects on the bass with the possible exception of compression, which really isn't an effect. So I'd say it's a good bet that Ron plugs in straight.
I'll second what Jimmy said. For live playing, I've usually seen Ron use just a Jazz bass into an SVT for that classic rock vintage grunt.
If there ARE effects on any TP recordings, it's probably something the producer stuck in there - so not really what Ron chose.
Note that Ron usually (but not always, I believe) plays with a pick.
