What effects is this bassist using?

Yes and no, personally I can mostly hear the difference between how distortion/fuzz compresses tone compared to a dedicated compressor. When you say using his pedalboard straight to an amp, what does that entail? Is there no compressor anywhere to be seen? And that being said, mostly an all in compression setup would be at the end of chain and usually implemented by the engineer rather than the player, which makes that a tricky thing as well to consider
Yes, using the pedalboard posted above (no comp, though I haven't looked into the amp itself to see if there is one built in). The Brassmaster/Diabolik is a gated-ish fuzz with a strong/artifacty attack character with a Clean blend so there is a lot going on there alone, then likely additional gain-staging from other pedals and/or amp. I am impressed by your ears if you can pull that all apart in a band mix!

Yeah if he's using that board, which looks like he religiously does, someone above called it, it's the space echo and aftermath mixed with fuzz that's giving it some kind of effect, i wouldn't be surprised if the trelicopter or vortex tracking affects it in the way we are hearing where one of the effects that's probably digital and tracking, is kicking in slightly later than the rest of the effects. This would actually make a lot of sense. I still might think there is some compression after the board though

Looking to see if anyone can help me identify what low-gain, crunchy goodness Monolord’s Mika Häkki uses in their song “Your Time to Shine.”

Thank you kindly!

Great find!! Might have to find me a moonshine…
Somehow forgot to mention his Orange AD200B amp in the search for dirt boxes, but no doubt that is a big part of his saturation sound all on its own. Those amps can get some killer spongy drive when cranked up (I was fortunate to have one sitting in my old rehearsal space in LA for years to play around on, along with one of the big Verellen bass heads). I didn’t care for its inherent voicing that much for what I was playing at the time, but for just cranking up for fun sometimes to play stonery stuff with a drummer it was really a blast!

Great to know! You know I’ve tried to incorporate the Boss Space Echo (because of Mika’s influence on me haha) but cannot get close the sound he goes for. I ended up getting an FKT Fretless which does a similar effect.

Funny enough, when I started playing, I didn’t know where to start with gear so I modeled my sound from my favorite bassist’s at the time. I went the Justin Chanceller Sansamp / GK 800RB route but as my tastes changed and I found myself trudging through crushing, stoner stuff, I scooped an Orange Terror Bass to get closer to Mika Häkki’s tone.

Don’t get me wrong, there are quite a few great bass rigs to note from bands like Sleep, Electric Wizard, Windhand… but there’s something so satisfying with what Häkki brings to the table.

Anyway, I 100% agree that his AD200B has a huge part in it, but I think i have part of that territory covered

Bought a JHS Moonshine V2 on reverb thanks to @TOGNA. Of course one popped up for sale in the classifieds the very next day lol. Going to see how it goes!
Nice! I’m curious how you’ll like it. I used a Keeley modded Tubescreamer through an SVT long ago and remember it sounding pretty killer, but haven’t really revisited the Tubescreamer circuits again for bass (back then there were far fewer bass-specific pedals to choose from). Screamers roll off plenty of lows and boost the mids significantly as part of their general character, but through a semi-scooped amp or enough gain they can sound fairly balanced. At least that’s how I remember it working with my SVT. And v2 has the Blend control so you can bring in some clean lows as necessary.

The Moonshine V2 was a graaaaand-slam folks!!!

You guys rock. Thank you!!

Without the clean blend it’s okay with the low end but with a smidge of clean, it does fabulously.

Ironically there was one just posted the other day in the classifieds

I just watched the JHS demo of it and it does sound great, and distinct from my experiences with Tubescreamers on bass- definitely holds a lot more bass! And funny enough I saw this comment on the video from Mika: "One of my absolute favorite pedals! I play bass in a doom band and I've used this as my clean tone, with just a little bit of drive rolled on. Pops out in all the best ways! Also use it as my overdrive when I play guitar. Will never part with it!"

That’s wicked!!

Hey, I’m playing with Mika’s solo band and send your questions to him at instagram, I’m shure he let you know what he is use, very warm and nice man!

Dude no way! That’s like a dream come true man! Thanks a million!!

He’s inspired my sound in so many ways. I started rocking a JHS Moonshine after seeing it on his board (although I use a clone, the one next to the Broughton Messenger). Putting a chorus before my dirt pedals gets me a step closer to his dirty sound too.

Mika is a king!

Much of his sound is the orange AD200B pushed to its limit, and biased to give crossover distortion on purpose. The pedals such bass, but the Orange hammer’s or back in. He used a Fender 300 pro (Model T) in early days: That one control white is an either or not both. He now uses a Guitar soul food for the drive. The oscillation is from a fast tremolo pedal.

A Dirty Haggard Koffin can get you close

Their drummer is their producer, and both of them respond to messages on instagram. He used a EQD Gary in the up coming album.
