What Envelope Filter should i buy?

I like the MXR I just got. It was brand new in the box and I got it from a guy on Craigslist for $100.

It took some playing around with the 5 controls to get the sound I wanted, but I got it.

Cool unit - looks really well made.

I'd recommend it.

more options:

- 3 Leaf Audio Groove Regulator or the NEW Proton
- Exar Pig Nose

(i don´t like: DOD FX-25B, Maxon/Ibanez AF-9, EHX Q-Tron+)

BUT, only 1 envelope filter on the pedal board is NEVER enough .... every one has its own character, and also a question of personal taste, also active/passive bass could make a difference with each filter. Try to buy many used filters on ebay/craiglist and test&tweak them for some days ... if you like it: keep it, otherwise sell it and buy another one .... thats what i´m doing right now .... i want to test the MXR M82 and PROTON ...

anything but a russian bass balls

Why? Did yours not work when you bought it, either? And, even after you plunked down $30, or however much they charge you in Yorkshire, for repairs, it still never quite worked properly, to the point where you had to trade it, and two other pedals, at a substantial loss, for something almost useful?

Not that I'm bitter...

But, to get on topic, get a big-box EHX Q-Tron. Not a Q-Tron+, but a plain ol' Q-Tron. I have one, and although I'll certainly try other envelope filters, I'm not in a burning hurry to do so, nor will I give up my Q-Tron for any other.

The only way to suggest a filter to you is to get an idea of what type of envelope filter tone you're looking for.

Since I don't know what tone you specifically want I'll just suggest the Source Audio Bass Envelope Filter. You really ought to seriously consider the Source Audio BEF. The range of filter tones you get for $120 is truly outstanding, and it's easy to recreate tones after you've dialed them in.

I'm still looking for *the* filter. I have a Protron coming today or tomorrow so hopefully that will be "the one".

I've tried the AF-9, EBS BassIQ, MXR, Boss AW-3, Boss AW-3, BassBalls and I'm sure a few others that I've forgotten. I didn't like any well enough to keep them on my pedalboard.

EDIT: just checked USPS and my Protron is in town. Not sure if it will be delivered today or tomorrow though. (USPS' tracking has greatly improved, BTW.)
